Toddler’s death suspicious
The death of a McLoud toddler remains under investigation.
Cody Paul Chama, the son of Ponca City resident Paul Chama, died at Children’s Hospital, Oklahoma City, last week. Circumstances surrounding his death are considered suspicious, according to authorities in Pottawatomie County.
According to authorities, Cody’s mother, Amanda Chama, who lives in McLoud with her boyfriend, reportedly was at work when her boyfriend called 911 Tuesday afternoon saying 3-year-old Cody was unresponsive.
Cody was taken the Children’s Hospital with suspicious injuries and marks on his body. KOCO 5 in Oklahoma City reported he was taken off life support before dying Wednesday night.
Pottawatomie County District Attorney’s Office is waiting on the medical examiner’s office for details on Cody’s death before considering filing charges, if any. Officers who responded to the 911 call are investigating the possibility of severe child abuse.
Cody’s funeral is 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Caldwell, Kan. Arrangements are by Schaeffer Mortuary, Caldwell.

A McLoud man has been arrested in connection with the death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son. Jason Cline, 25, was booked into the Pottawatomie County jail on a first-degree murder complaint. He is accused of killing Cody Paul Chama, 3.
SHAWNEE — A McLoud man was arrested Tuesday night in connection with the death of his girlfriend's toddler.
Jason Cline, 25, was booked into the Pottawatomie County jail on a first-degree murder complaint. He is accused of killing Cody Paul Chama, 3.
Cody Paul was taken to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City on Oct. 5 and died the following day.
"This child's brain injury was so devastating he had no chance of survival," Pottawatomie County District Attorney Richard Smothermon said.
Smothermon said he was present at the child's autopsy, but declined to comment on what specifically caused the child's death until the state medical examiner's office completes its preliminary report.Cody Paul lived in McLoud with his mother, Amanda Cheek, Cline, and Cline's 6- and 4-year-old daughters.
According to an arrest affidavit: Cheek told investigators her son was alert and waved goodbye when she left him with Cline for a doctor's appointment. She said when she returned, Cody Paul was lying on the couch unconscious and his forehead was bruised.
Authorities reported Cody Paul's head was bruised and swollen, and his genitalia swollen. A physician at OU Medical Center said his injuries were consistent with child abuse. Cline's 6-year-old daughter told a forensic interviewer Cody Paul was constantly "in trouble" and her father was usually the one who spanked him.
While Cody Paul was being treated by an emergency medical technician, Cline asked a police officer "is it cause what I done to him?"
Cody Paul spent last weekend with his father, Paul Chama, 38, flipping pancakes, watching airplanes land and take off at an airport and having the toddler's picture professionally taken.Cody Paul's funeral is today in Hiawatha, Kan.

Jason Cline has formally been charged with first-degree murder in the apparent beating death of 3-year-old Cody Paul Chama. According to DA Richard Smothermon, Cody died of blunt force trauma that resulted in brain injury too severe for Cody to survive. New information has come out about the relationship between Amanda Cheek, Cody’s mother, and Jason Cline. News reports state they had only been dating about five months. There have been several “glowing reports” (including from friends of Jason who commented here) about what a good father Jason Cline was to his own two daughters. I’m beginning to feel that Jason’s “problem” with Cody is that he was the son of another man. I think Jason most likely, the 5 short months he was in Amanda and Cody’s lives, charmed his way into gaining her trust and then acted totally different toward Cody when Amanda was not around. Accounts from Jason’s two daughters have indicated that “Cody was always in trouble” and Jason was the one giving him spankings.
I feel like commenting personally on the friends of Jason Cline who, for some reason, feel the need to come to his defense. For instance, Julian Ahumada was in court Wednesday to show support to his friend, Jason. He gave an account of an attentive father who coached his daughter’s basketball and T-ball teams and had a “kid-friendly” home for them. What I’d like to share is why people find it so hard to say “I was sure snowed by the guy.” Now, I’m not saying that it is wrong for a long-time friend to be in court when their buddy is facing murder charges, because just like a parent having to accept their child has committed murder as a good friend we can’t just turn off the tap of caring about a person. But what is the good of making a statement like this, “No one believes Jason is capable of hurting a child.” That’s different from saying, “No one would have thought Jason could have harmed a child.”
The evidence to date is that Cody suffered massive brain injury while in the sole care of Jason Cline. Cline’s own daughters spoke of the “constant” punishment being given to Cody by Jason while at the same time his own daughters were “never in trouble”. It appears Jason Cline’s “paternal instincts” only went so far as his own offspring….it did not extend to Paul Chama’s son.

McLoud man to stand trial in death of toddler
The mother of the dead toddler testified Thursday that her boyfriend admitted to her that he rubbed her son's face in urine.
April 29, 2011
SHAWNEE — The mother of a dead toddler testified Thursday that her boyfriend admitted to her that he rubbed her son's face in urine.
The preliminary hearing for Jason William Cline, 26, lasted less than two hours Thursday, ending with a Pottawatomie County judge ruling Cline would stand trial on a first-degree murder charge. Cline is accused of killing Cody Paul Chama, 3, in October. Cline is being held in the county jail without bail.
Cody's mother, Amanda Cheek, testified that she and her son lived with Cline in McLoud, along with his two young daughters. She said she left the morning of Oct. 5 for a doctor's appointment and Cody seemed well. When she returned two hours later, he was vomiting and had what appeared to be a rug burn on his forehead, she said. Cline called 911 to report Cody wasn't breathing.
Boy had severe brain injury
Police officer Michael Randall testified Cline was on the floor attempting to resuscitate Cody with CPR when he arrived. At one point, Cline made statements to officers saying, “This is because of what I did — isn't it?” Randall said. Cheek said Cline later told her Cody urinated on the floor, and he rubbed the toddler's face in it.
Cody died of blunt force trauma, the state medical examiner's office reported. District Attorney Richard Smothermon said the child's brain injury was so devastating he had no chance of surviving. Cline and Cheek had been dating about five months. He worked as a waiter at Red Lobster and was a student at Rose State College. Cheek shared custody of Cody with his father, Paul Chama, of Ponca City.
He lived with his father two weeks out of every month, Paul Chama said.
Calls to Cline's attorney were not returned.

A McLoud man charged with first-degree murder in the October 2010 child
abuse death of his girlfriend’s child was set for jury term this week
but waived his right to a speedy trial Monday in Pottawatomie County
District Court.
Jason William Cline, 27, was set for jury trial this week, but his case is now scheduled for the May 14 jury trial docket.
Charges in this case allege Cline caused the death of Cody Paul Chama,
3, by “the willful or malicious use of unreasonable force” to the
child’s head on Oct. 5, 2010, causing wounds from which he died.
Cody died Oct. 6, 2010, at Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center.
According to the arrest affidavit originally filed in this case, Cline
was reported to be the boyfriend of Cody’s mother, Amanda Cheek, and
they lived at a home in McLoud. The affidavit also shows Cline “was the
only adult with Cody Chama when he sustained injuries that led to his
death.”
Cody was taken to Unity Health Center, then transferred to Children’s
Hospital in Oklahoma City, where doctors said tests showed a brain bleed
and severe hemorrhaging in both eyes, with a doctor concluding they
were injuries consistent with child abuse, court records showed.
McLoud police began investigating the case, and the District Attorney’s
Drug and Violent Crime Task Force investigators also probed the case,
resulting in Cline’s arrest.
If convicted of first-degree murder, child abuse, Cline could face the
death penalty, imprisonment for life, or imprisonment for life without
parole.
