Police: Dad, 76, Sat On, Slapped Young Son
Father Charged With Child Abuse

PALM BAY, Fla. -- A 76-year-old father was jailed after police said he sat on and repeatedly slapped a child after the boy failed to do his homework.
Gerard Forest, of Palm Bay, was charged with child abuse after the boy’s mother called police late Thursday to report a disturbance, Local 6 news partner Florida Today reported.
Palm Bay police said Forest picked the boy up from school and later attempted to get him to do his homework. Forest said the boy became unruly during the conversation.
Police said Forest struck the boy in the face several times using the back of his hand before sitting on him and covering his mouth to the point where the boy could not breathe.
Police documented a reddish, hand-shaped bruise on the boy’s face and took Forest into custody. Police said the boy was younger than 10 years old.
Forest, described as the father of the boy by police, is expected to go before a judge for a hearing on the felony charge today at the Brevard County Detention Center in Sharpes.
He was held at the jail on a $5,000 bond, officials reported.
