SILVER CITY - Silver City police, following a lead, got a search warrant to
begin searching the landfill at the Southwest Solid Waste Authority for
the body of teenager David Ortiz Jr., who went missing on Halloween -
three days after he went to court seeking visitation of his son Joshua. Silver
City Police Chief Ed Reynolds said the Investigative Unit of the
department received information that Ortiz's body may have been dumped
in the Southwest Solid Waste Authority landfill. According to
information obtained by the Grant County Sheriff's Office, Reynolds said
Ortiz's body may have been placed in a dumpster sometime in the early
part of November 2010."This is just another lead we are following up on," Reynolds said.A
Magistrate Court judge signed the search warrant on Wednesday, and
investigators began searching the landfill Thursday and continued Friday
but had turned up nothing by 5:30 p.m. Friday. Reynolds said they will
continue searching today and possibly through the weekend. He also said
this is just one of several searches the department has conducted in
different areas in Grant County, but so far they have turned up nothing.Ortiz was reported missing by his family on Nov. 3, 2010 after not being since Halloween. Grant
County Crime Stoppers had previously issued a $1,000 reward for
information leading to finding Ortiz, and has now increased that award
to $2,000, with the other $1,000 coming from the Ortiz family. Elizabeth

"I've always thought that something bad happened to my son."Three
days before his disappearance, David Ortiz Jr. went to court to get
visitation with his son, Joshua, who is now about to turn 2 years old.
Ortiz's mother said the baby's mother's family was not happy about that
and that she and her husband have only seen their grandson Joshua a few
times since her son's disappearance and several of those have been by
chance. She said the family had a visit with Joshua Oct. 30, the day
before David disappeared, and another visit in March, the day a story
came out in the Sun-News about David still being missing. Elizabeth
Ortiz also said that immediately after her son went to court seeking
visitation, he received a threat - someone told David's brother Charles
to tell his brother to "watch his back."Since then, she said she
has run into her grandson and his mother several times at the grocery
store and Walmart, and had one visit."I asked them if they could
take Joshua to my mother-in-law's house because my brother-in-law came
from Nevada and they did take Joshua there," she said. "After that I've
been leaving messages."As the search for her son continued Friday
at the landfill, Elizabeth Ortiz was overcome with grief and crying so
hard she could barely speak."I just want to know what exactly happened and why," she said. "I have a feeling of why but I'm not 100 percent sure."Christine Steele can be reached at (575) 538-5893 ext. 5802.Information
