A 3-year-old boy was shot and killed in a Union County home Sunday afternoon, and authorities were searching the home where he was shot late Sunday. The Union County Sheriff's Office identified the boy as Jesse David Simpson. Authorities found him on the back porch of the home, on Faith Church Road in Hemby Bridge, southeast of Charlotte. He had a gunshot wound to his upper torso, said Sheriff's Office Capt. Mike Easley. The shooting took place about 2:30 p.m. He was shot with a 50-caliber, black-powder rifle, which Easley described as an antique. Jesse's father, Derek Simpson, 24, and 4-year-old brother were on the back porch when Jesse was shot, but Easley would not say who pulled the trigger. No one had been charged late Sunday. The home was owned by Jesse's grandparents, who were not identified, according to WCNC, the Observer's news partner. Jesse's mother was at work when the shooting took place, according to WCNC. Easley declined to say what led to the shooting, saying the investigation was not complete.
