Casey Anthony: ‘Blockbuster information’ in new documents

“New documents have just been released in the case against Casey Anthony, and they contain some blockbuster information that we haven’t heard before,” WFTV-Channel anchor Vanessa Echols said at noon.

That wasn’t hyperbole.

WFTV, WESH-Channel 2 and WKMG-Channel 6 highlighted that Mark Hawkins, a high school friend, wore a wire and met Anthony twice several days before she was indicted on first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee. Hawkins tried to get Casey to open up about what had happened to her missing child.

“Hawkins told investigators Casey told him around June and July of 2008 that ’something happened’ a long time ago but she wouldn’t tell him what it was over the phone,” WFTV’s Kathi Belich said. “Casey said Lee Anthony knew most of the story about what had happened to Caylee and she would tell him all about it someday. And she said she told her mother and brother whatever it was and they became angry and frustrated about it.”

WESH-Channel 2’s Bob Kealing explained that the FBI worked with Naval Intelligence to recruit Cpl. Mark David Hawkins as a confidential informant. Hawkins told investigators about the phone conversation he had with Casey Anthony, and he met her on Oct. 9 and 10, 2008.

“Whatever Casey felt she needed to tell him in person, these documents state that Anthony made no admission of involvement in her child’s disappearance,” Kealing said.

Kealing also highlighted “a setback for the defense team” in the documents released today. “Lab tests reveal no DNA on the laundry bag and shorts found with Caylee Anthony’s remains,” Kealing said. “If there was foreign DNA, that certainly could have helped the defense raise reasonable doubt about who put the remains in the woods.”

WKMG-Channel 6’s Mike DeForest said the documents reveal that a prosecution bug expert looked through vacuum filters used by CSI technicians to clean out the trunk of Anthony’s car. “That entomologist said in those vacuum filters he found parts of insects that reaffirm his earlier conclusion that a dead body had been placed in Casey Anthony’s car,” DeForest said.

DeForest added that there had been no reaction yet from the defense team. But a defense bug expert said the flies that were found “are just common flies that would have been associated with the garbage that was found in the trunk,” DeForest said. “What we’re going to see at trial in two months is a battle of the bug experts.”

WESH’s Kealing also reported that several search volunteers complained to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office that the Anthony defense team investigator misrepresented himself. The complaint? The investigator said he was calling from the Orange County Courthouse, Kealing reported. In a later report, Kealing added that sheriff’s detectives investigated and didn’t find probable cause that “defense team investigators illegally impersonated law enforcement.”
