Burns Lake Death Now a Homicide

Burns Lake, B.C.- The autopsy on the body of the 17 year Chassidy Charlie of Burns Lake has been completed.
Sergeant Rob Vermeulen, says the results are not being released to the public at this time. However, he says they are now treating this case as a homicide investigation.

Her mother, Geraldine Charlie says she was the one who found her daughter last week in their home on Uncha Mountain Road.
She says she found Chassidy on the kitchen floor laying on her back.
Geraldine says Chassidy's face was badly burned and she was missing half of her hair. She is asking the person who did this to come forward so there can be justice.

Vermeulen says police believe this to be an isolated incident and not a random act. The investigation continues.

Memorial for Slain Burns Lake Teen This Evening
February 4, 2011

Prince George, B.C. - A memorial service for Burns Lake teen Chassidy Charlie will take place today. 17-year-old Chassidy was found dead in her home on Uncha Mountain Road last week.

The memorial takes place at 5:00 at the Grassy Plains Church today. Tomorrow at 1:00 a funeral will be held at Grassy Plains School.

RCMP Ask for Patience as Burns Lake Teen's Death is Investigated

Burns Lake, B.C. - The investigation of the murder of a Burns Lake teen continues to move forward. 17-year-old Chassidy Charlie was found dead and badly burned in her home on January 26th.

RCMP are releasing few details at this time, but say the believe the incident was isolated and not a random attack. Sergeant Rob Vermeulen says unsubstantiated rumors have been circulating within the community.

"During the course of an investigation, obviously our investigators don't release very much information," says Vermeulen, "But what that leads to is rumors and speculation within the community. We're just asking that the public exercise some patience and refrain from spreading unsubstantiated information like that."

Vermeulen says all leads must be followed up on, and time spent investigating rumors could be better spent examining solid information. He says investigators are now working on processing evidence gathered at the the scene.

So far no arrests have been made, or charges laid.

Police charge 17-year-old with murder of Burns Lake teen

An arrest has been made in the January 2011 murder of Burns Lake teen Chassidy Charlie.

The North District Major Crime Unit, with the assistance of Burns Lake RCMP, has arrested and charged a 17-year-old male from Burns Lake with second degree murder, after charge approval from the Smithers Regional Crown Counsel office.

The suspect, who was known to Charlie, cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

A court date has yet to be determined.

Charlie, also 17 years old and a member of the Cheslatta Carrier First Nation, was found murdered at her home on Uncha Mountain Road on January 26, 2011.

At the time, local media reported her mother, Geraldine Charlie, found her daughter with her face burnt, half her hair gone and her cellphone missing.

A homicide investigation was launched days later, after an autopsy was conducted.

Cpl. John Grierson of the North District Major Crime Unit said Wednesday in a release, “we recognize that this tragedy affected the entire community and we hope that this arrest can bring some peace to the families and friends who knew Chassidy Charlie.”

Charlie’s Facebook profile — yet to be taken down — continues to be lined with daily horoscopes and fortune cookie updates the girl will never read.

The former Grassy Plains Secondary School student described herself online as an animal lover who adored her best friend and liked to tape pictures of celebrities to her bedroom wall.

She also aired her insecurities as well, writing, “i sometimes hate my height, birthmarks on my face and my hair, i feel like I can’t breath (sic).”

A memorial page of Facebook — titled, “In a lovving (sic) memory of Chassidy Charlie” was also made in honour of the slain teen.

“Never ever going to 4get you my baby girl niece,” wrote Janet Gerald Whitford in April of last year.

Burns Lake was struck with another tragedy weeks later when resident Kyle Daniels, 21, was found stabbed to death while visiting family in Fort Qu’Appelle, Sask. on Feb. 19, 2011.

A 17-year-old Saskatchewan man was charged with Daniels’ murder in August 2011, according to reports.
