Casey Anthony: Guess along with the folks on ‘In Session’

The mysterious recess in the jury selection for Casey Anthony’s trial unleashed a whole lot of speculating this afternoon on “In Session.”

Field producer Michael Christian acknowledged, “We’re just reading tea leaves.”

And that was refreshing. Because people in this case have frequently read tea leaves without acknowledging that’s what they were doing.

Christian and Vinnie Politan acknowledged that they were guessing. “There are no answers,” Politan said of the matter that had been discussed in chambers with the attorneys and the judge.

Politan studied the body language of Casey Anthony. When Anthony dabbed her eyes, Politan wondered if they were tears for emotion, allergies or a cold. Then Politan noted that Anthony smiled and gave a deep breath when leaving the courtroom.

Politan said the whole key was that defense attorney Jose Baez wasn’t there when the court recessed. “The attorneys know, but they’re not saying anything,” Politan said.

“He not only left the courtroom at lunchtime, he left the courthouse,” Christian said. “I saw him go out the front door.”

Politan also wondered if Baez had spent the lunch hour with Anthony about a potential plea. Christian discounted that idea. She is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.

Another strange bit: Jean Casarez said the defense team, which usually sits at one table at lunch, was at two tables.

Field producer Christian said one crew member noticed that the defense team, when back in the courtroom, was cleaning off the table. “It seemed so unrealistic they were packing up,” he added.

Politan said the signs suggest that “something big is going on.”

Or maybe not. WFTV-Channel 9 legal analyst Bill Sheaffer and WESH-Channel 2 were saying that Baez had fallen ill.

The court will resume at 8:30 a.m. Thursday in Pinellas County.
