Mom Charged In Toddler's Oxycodone Death

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. --
A Tampa Bay-area mother has been charged with manslaughter after she told police her 2-year-old daughter apparently took an oxycodone tablet she'd left on her night stand and later died.
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office said they arrested 27-year-old Tiffany Lynn Mitchell onTuesday. An autopsy had shown that her daughter, Kaylynn Bella Mitchell, died from having the powerful painkiller in her system.
The sheriff's office said her mother admitted that the pill had disappeared from her night stand at her Brooksville home on Jan. 31. The child was found unresponsive later.
Tiffany Mitchell had initially denied knowing how the child got the drug.
She is charged with manslaughter by culpable negligence and was being held with a $15,000 bond. It wasn't clear if she had an attorney yet.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Mitchell could have been sentenced to as many as 13 years in prison, but her family plead for less time, even probation.
Their plea, they say, is because her two sons need a mother, and that should out-weigh the need to punish a mistake.
