Kentucky State police say a little boy was locked in a room with no food and water by his grandmother and her boyfriend.
Police says the incident happened at a home just off of Williams
Hollow Road in the community of Sand Gap in Jackson County, over the
course of several months.

The child was taken to the hospital suffering form severe malnutrition.
Neighbors say they never noticed anything and are stunned that something like this could happen.
"Well yeah, I'm kind of shocked. I wouldn't really expect anything
like that to happen around here because we're just a small town. Nothing
really happens," says Jessica Brooks.
The child's 47-year-old grandmother, Hazel Jackson and her boyfriend, 50-year-old Dennis Rumberger were arrested Wednesday.
The two were charged with attempted murder and criminal abuse.

The Jackson County case of a grandmother and her boyfriend charged in starving
a child has been moved to circuit court.

Due to an indictment handed down last week, a hearing in the case of
Hazel Jackson, 47, and Dennis Rumberger, 50, will not take place in
Jackson County District Court Monday. The case will resume in circuit
court next month.

Police say Jackson and Rumberger locked Jackson's 5-year-old grandson
in his room for months with limited food and water. Police first
received a complaint on June 27. Officers found the child at a home on
Williams Hollow Road in McKee. EMS immediately transported the child to
UK Children's Hospital for treatment of severe malnutrition.

The couple faces attempted murder and criminal abuse charges.

Police also charged the boy's mother with criminal abuse last week.
She said she noticed her son getting thinner, but doesn't believe
anything criminal was going on. Her case will also proceed in circuit court.

Jackson and Rumberger claim innocence. They say the child spent only
short periods in his room and ate regular meals.
