A man, who is charged with abusing his 18-month-old stepdaughter, could face additional charges now that the child has died.
Dontavious Washington is facing felony child abuse charges for
an incident that happened early Monday morning. Investigators were
called to a home in Henderson where they found Destini Bullock in
cardiac arrest.
She was rushed to the hospital and doctors determined she was abused, causing her heart to stop. She died later.
According
to the autopsy, her cause of death is due to "complications of blunt
force head injuries." The medical examiner also called the trauma
"non-accidental."
Investigators have not said when additional charges are expected to be filed.

HENDERSON (WTVD) -- Henderson police arrested a 23-year-old man Thursday after responding to a call about a child in cardiac arrest.

Officers responded to a residence around 1:19 a.m. in reference to an 18-month-old girl in cardiac arrest. The child, who police identified as Destini Bullock, was initially transported to Maria Parham Medical Center and then transferred to UNC Children's Hospital.

Police say the child died Friday afternoon and now the case is a homicide investigation.

Upon further investigation, officers determined the child had been abused. Details about Bullock's injuries will be released after an autopsy is completed.

Police charged 23-year-old Dontavious Washington with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury and additional charges are pending. He was placed under a $125,000 bond.

Henderson, N.C. — A Vance County grand jury has indicted a Henderson man on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the death of his 18-month-old stepdaughter.

Dontavious Washington, 24, of 130 Boothe Ave., had previously been charged with felony child abuse in Destini Bullock's death. His bond has been reduced from $500,000 to $25,000.

Destini died May 20 of "non-accidental" head injuries, according to an autopsy report. She had a large bruise and cuts on her left cheek, face and eyelid and hemorrhages in both eyes.

Authorities were told initially that Destini was sleeping in the arms of a male caregiver who became startled, jumped out of bed and dropped her, according to medical documents.
