The father of a 5-month-old boy who died last week due to a brain injury has been arrested.

Anthony M. Angel, 23, was arrested Tuesday on warrants for child abuse resulting in death and first-degree murder. He was being held in Pueblo County jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

The mother, Brandi Strawn, 22, of La Junta, also was arrested but on separate charges of theft by receiving and pawn broker violations, police said.

Antonio Angel was taken off life support on Nov. 21 at Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora. Antonio suffered a head injury on Nov. 18.

"Medical experts said he died from an acute injury and (Anthony M. Angel) was the last one to be with the child," said Sgt. Darren Velarde of the Pueblo Police Department.

The father told police the baby had hit his head on a bus, but Velarde said the child's injuries don't match his story.

Velarde was reluctant to elaborate on how the child was injured because "we're still trying to tie up some loose ends."

The father was arrested at police headquarters following a short interview with detectives. Velarde said Anthony M. Angel agreed to be interviewed but in the course requested a lawyer.

Velarde said the decision to arrest the father came after talking with the district attorney's office.

During the course of the investigation, detectives found Strawn was reportedly selling stolen gold jewelry at pawn shops.

"As we started going through this the detectives traced (the parents') steps all over town, but during that we found out about the thefts. The only reason we found this was because of the death investigation," said Deputy Chief Andy McLachlan.

Strawn was being held in jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
