ALBANY — A baby girl missing in Schenectady was dropped off at an Albany church Friday.
Madison Green, who is 11 weeks old, was being sought as part of a custody case that has landed both her parents in jail.
Mother Janel Davis is charged with perjury for denying the child was hers.
"She originally reported the child missing, that someone was watching the child and didn't bring her back," said Lt. Mark McCracken of the Schenectady police. Police found the child and returned her to the mother, but concerns about care of the baby led Child Protective Services to take the mother to court. The mother then denied the baby was hers.
The father also was arrested a week ago and charged with criminal contempt and custodial interference, McCracken said.
Custody was then awarded to Child Protective Services, but the mother then said she did not have the child.
The child was turned over to staff of the Blessed Sacrament Church
in Albany at approximately 10:24 a.m. Friday. Police say the child was
dropped off by a man who did not identify himself but said the child in
his possession was Green.
The child was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital
as a precaution and is being evaluated there. Schenectady County Child
Protective Services has been notified as is responding as well.

ALBANY, N.Y. -- “A beautiful little baby girl, beautiful baby and smiling,” said Rev. John Bradley of Blessed Sacrament Church.

That's how Father John Bradley describes 11-week-old Madison Green, happy and smiling after an anonymous man showed up at Blessed Sacrament Church in Albany Saturday Morning and asked to see a priest.

Rev. Bradley said, “I thought he was just coming in for food or something, I let him in and said can I help you, he said I want to leave this baby here, I said leave the baby here, he said yeah."

And with that, the man, who didn't leave his name, set the baby and her car seat on the floor of Father Bradley's office and left. But not before telling the staff that he wanted to do the right thing and that this is baby girl that's been in the news, missing since January 25th.

Lt. Mark McCracken of the Schenectady Police Department said, "CPS was awarded custody of the child though Schenectady County Family Court and the child was never produced which started all of this."

Officials said Madison was last seen with her mother, Janel Davis, now facing perjury charges for allegedly denying her relation to the baby during a court hearing. The baby's father, Darelle Green, also charged with criminal contempt and custodial interference. Investigators now trying to figure out how the baby disappeared and who's responsible. And hoping to find the man who dropped her at the church for any information he can provide.

“How this individual came to be in possession of the child, what his intent was, did he know the child was missing, those are all factors that will come in to play and will be determined through and investigation,” said Lt. McCracken.

In 35 years at the church, father Bradley said it's the first time anything like this has happened. But he's thankful that whatever the circumstance the baby is now in good hands.

“I just give the man credit, he did the right thing,” said Rev. Bradley.

SCHENECTADY — A county grand jury is weighing additional criminal charges against the mother of a nearly six-month-old baby girl who was dropped off at a church after being reported missing, according to the district attorney's office.

Janel Davis, 25, is currently jailed on a perjury charge for allegedly denying that she is the mother of Madison Green.

On Thursday, Assistant District Attorney Tracy Brunecz said the case was presented to the grand jury but that no criminal charges had yet been handed up.

The case began in January with a call to the county Department of Social Services hot line.

Police have said that Davis initially reported the child missing, telling them that someone was watching Madison and didn't bring her back.

Police subsequently found the child and returned her to the mother, but concerns about care of the baby led Child Protective Services to take the mother to Family Court.

When Protective Services was awarded temporary custody of Madison, the mother claimed she didn't know where the child was.

The custody case took a twist shortly before 10:30 a.m. Feb. 3 when an unidentified man dropped Madison off at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Albany, and Green said she was not the mother, which resulted in the perjury charge.

The child was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital for evaluation and Schenectady County Child Protective Services was notified.

The infant's father, Deralle Green, also 25, is behind bars on misdemeanor counts of criminal contempt and custodial interference, according to Brunecz. She said the couple do not have any other children together but declined to comment when asked if either Green or Davis has children from other relationships.

Both were being held at the county jail in lieu of $3,500 bail.
