PITTSBURGH -- Police said a mother and father from Pittsburgh have been charged with kidnapping their own son.

Gregory McKenith has been missing since October when his parents were ordered to give him into the custody of Children, Youth and Family Services.

Police said when the order was given, McKenith's parents never turned him over to CYF.

The boy's father, Gregory McKenith Sr. turned himself in to deputies on Tuesday night. He is facing kidnapping and child endangerment charges.

Deputies continue to search for the boy and his mother, Darnisha Mills. Mills also faces kidnapping charges.

Police said Mills and her son are believed to be in Highland Park, East Liberty or Sharpsburg.

Mother accused of kidnapping son surrenders in Michigan
Thursday, February 16, 2012
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A woman accused of kidnapping her 2-year-old son surrendered Wednesday to authorities in Michigan.

Lt. Jack Kearney, with the Allegheny County sheriff's office, said in a statement that Darnisha Mills, 24, of Pontiac, Mich., was in the Oakland County Jail Wednesday evening awaiting extradition back to Pittsburgh.

Lt. Kearney said workers from the Allegheny County Children, Youth and Families office had been searching for Ms. Mills and her boyfriend, Gregory McKenith Sr., since October, when a family court judge ordered the couple to hand over their son, Gregory McKenith Jr., to CYF. CYF workers had no luck finding the couple or their son at their last listed address in the Hill District.

After discovering that all three had been spotted checking out of the Hotel 51 in Baldwin on Monday, deputies contacted Mr. McKenith, who surrendered Tuesday.

Sheriff's deputies contacted Ms. Mills' family members, who arranged for her to surrender in Michigan at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Lt. Kearney said officials in Oakland County are taking care of the boy until Allegheny County sheriff's deputies can bring him back to Pittsburgh, where CYF will take custody of him.

Ms. Mills and Mr. McKenith both face charges of kidnapping, interfering with child custody, concealing the whereabouts of a child, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal conspiracy.
