"Newborn Jane Doe" - Hours old - Long Beach CA

A new mother did not abandon her newborn baby girl at
a Long Beach gas station Monday night, she actually gave the
infant away, according to Long Beach police.

"The baby was born at a
residence in Long Beach, then the mother of the baby gave the child to
this person who called 911," said Lisa Massacani, Long Beach police
spokeswoman. "The baby was born a few hours before the 911 call was made."

The child was taken to a
hospital where it's under observation but did not appear to be injured,
she said. The child's 28-year-old mother is being questioned by police,
and could face child-abuse charges, said authorities.

Sonia Hernandez, who
initially claimed to have found the child at the gas station, is also
being questioned and could be charged with filing a false police report, said investigators.

Police would not say if the two women knew each other.
