Killer in Deerfield double-murder suicide described as 'evil man'

February 10, 2012

DEERFIELD BEACH — William De Jesus knocked on a stranger's door
Thursday night, argued with the 76-year-old Canadian man who answered,
then fatally shot him in the chest and head when the man, who spoke no
English, didn't hand over a cellphone.

The random killing of
snowbird Ovila Plante in front of his 35-foot motor home at the Highland
Woods RV park was the beginning of a six-hour nightmare. It ultimately
left De Jesus and his son dead; his wife and another son seriously
injured, all at De Jesus' hand.

Frantic after killing Plante, De
Jesus, of Port Orange, grabbed a phone belonging to Plante's girlfriend,
Pierrette Beauchemin, whom he was now holding hostage, and tried to
call 911.

Instead, De Jesus, 41, hit a button and was connected to the woman's
daughter. Joanne Beauchemin, 49, of Pompano Beach, begged De Jesus not
to harm her mother, 70.

"If your mom does whatever I say, I'm not going to hurt her," she recalled him saying.
Pierrette Beauchemin ran out of the RV unharmed as a SWAT team waited outside.
Hours later, De Jesus stabbed his two children and his wife before
fatally stabbing himself, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

One of the children, Jeshiah, 9, was already dead when the SWAT team entered
the RV shortly after 12:30 a.m. Friday. De Jesus' wife, Deanna, 37, and
their other child, Samson, 7, were recovering at North Broward Medical
Center on Friday.

They are expected to survive, Broward Sheriff's spokesman Jim Leljedal said.

The bizarre attack stunned neighborhood residents, many of whom, like Beauchemin and Plante, are Canadian snowbirds.

"Some folks were scared, and we reassured them it was random and could have
happened anywhere," said Deerfield Beach Mayor Peggy Noland, who visited
with the park's residents Friday afternoon. "Three streets south it
could have been Pompano, three streets north it could have been Boca. I
don't know if this guy even knew where he was."

Deanna De Jesus' mother, Janet Evans, said Friday that she knew her son-in-law was
capable of violence, and she knew she would someday get a phone call
with bad news about her daughter, whom she has not seen in three years.

Evans was relieved to learn her daughter was alive, but choked with grief to learn that Jeshiah, who was autistic, had died.

Foster mom says boys dreaded ‘monster’ dad

Before William DeJesus savagely attacked his own
children during a police standoff in Deerfield Beach, a foster mother
warned DCF: The children are afraid of the ‘bad man.’

In a waiting room at a Winter Haven office building, the DeJesus
brothers were being prepared for a visit with their parents, both of
whom had lost custody of the children amid allegations the couple had
repeatedly molested them. The toddler clung to his foster mother like a
lifeline.

“They had to pull [the younger boy] from my arms,” the
foster mom said this week in an interview with The Miami Herald. “They
ripped them away from us to take them in there. They were screaming, and
Jeshiah was crying.”

Their fear followed them inside the
visitation room. As a therapist and court-appointed guardian watched,
Jeshiah lay flat, peering through the sliver of space between the floor
and the door. From outside, the foster mom saw his tiny fingers reaching
out from underneath the door.

“There was fear in those children,” the foster mom said. “They pleaded not to go in. They screamed.”
The image now is seared in her memory, haunting her.

In a seven-hour rampage at a Deerfield Beach motor home Feb. 9, the boys’
father, William DeJesus, shot one man, held the dead man’s girlfriend
hostage, and took a knife to his own family, stabbing himself, his wife,
Deanna Beauchamp and their two sons. Jeshiah died, as did his father.
His little brother and mother survived.

“My heart is breaking,” the foster mom said. “I wake up every night and see this little baby, this little Jeshiah.”

Since the two boys were reunited with their birth parents, the foster mom has
moved into a retirement community. She agreed to speak to The Herald
under the condition that her name be withheld, as, she said, she still
fears the DeJesus family.

The two boys lived with the foster mother for about 18 months in Polk County, just west of Tampa, after
child-protection workers said that years of domestic violence and
allegations of sex abuse made DeJesus and Beauchamp unfit parents.

The two DeJesus boys came into the woman’s care in February 2008, when the
DCF hotline received the second of five abuse calls involving William
DeJesus. Having just moved to a domestic violence shelter,Beauchamp
disclosed to authorities that both she and her husband had been
molesting the boys for months. “He had made her believe that this was
the way to show the children their love,” a report said.

From the beginning, records say, the foster parents had trouble understanding the
brothers, who hit strangers for no reason and were unusually clingy.
The foster parents described them in records as “strange.”

But after only a month, case notes say, the couple became smitten. Their
older children “have become very attached to them and do not want them
to leave,” reports said.

A foster-care worker reported the two
boys lived in a “welcoming” room with “age-appropriate furniture and
toys.” There was a game room where the brothers could play with their
foster siblings. And a backyard pool where they swam. The family
vacationed at Disney World and in the Keys.

When the sun was up,
Jeshiah, who suffered from autism, fared well enough. But after dark,
“Jeshiah is up most of the night and he screams constantly,” case notes
say. His brother “sometimes screams out ‘don’t hit me’.”

Case workers wrote in November 2008 that “the boys appear to be thriving” in
the foster home. A month later, the file said, “the boys appear to have
come a long way in their development since being placed with the” foster
family.

“We told them we wanted to adopt these children,” the foster mom said, “no ifs, ands or buts.”

That was the plan when child-welfare administrators placed the two boys in
the home, which was licensed by DCF as a therapeutic foster home —
meaning the couple had experience in dealing with children who had
special needs. But in May 2009, the plan changed. DCF announced it would
reunify the children with DeJesus and Beauchamp. In anticipation of
their return, the boys would begin a series of visits. The foster
parents were outraged.

“Foster parent expressed her very strong
concern for the emotional and physical well-being of children if
returned to parents’ custody,” a Jan. 22, 2009, notation said. “Foster
parent said that [the younger brother] is very much afraid of the ‘bad
man’ under his bed and has to be consistently reassured that there is no
one in his closet or under his bed.” The DeJesus case file makes clear
that “the bad man” was the boys’ father, whom the younger boy sometimes
called the “monster.”

A lengthy narrative in the children’s
foster-care service record describes the boys’ first visit with their
parents after the reunification plan was announced. They first met with
their mother, while DeJesus was in a separate room. The foster mother
remained outside. The younger boy, the note says, kept a “blank”
expression through most of the visit, though he smiled from time to
time. Jeshiah showed no signs of “distress.”

Inside the visitation
room, notes say, Jeshiah “would lie on the floor and look under the
door.” From just outside the room, the foster mother recalls seeing “his
little fingers” reaching under the door. Beauchamp suggested the boy
was “looking for his Daddy.”

But the foster mother had a different explanation: The boys were scared to death, and looking for the only
comfort they knew, their foster family.

“I saw the fear in those children’s eyes when they had to do those visits,” she said.

Less than two years after the children were taken from her, the foster mom
received word: Jeshiah was dead. And hi brother had been stabbed
repeatedly.

“My husband and I both knew these children would be hurt,” she says now.

“I wish there was anything I could do to bring Jeshiah back. Anything,”
she said. “I still see Jeshiah the way he was. I still see him smiling.”

Records show alleged child abuse in RV Park rampage case

Last Updated: Yesterday at 7:10 am EST

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Officials released
documents on a family detailing alleged child abuse prior to the father
going on a deadly rampage at a South Florida RV park.

According to records at the Department of Children and
Families, the department investigated alleged abuse occurring at William
DeJesus' house dating back to 2007, but returned the children to the
family.

Last month, DeJesus would then shoot and kill the owner
of a motor home at a Deerfield Beach RV park. He then stabbed himself
and his autistic 9-year-old son to death. DeJesus also wounded his wife
and 7-year-old son. "I don't care about him, I care about the kids,"
said Matt Durkin, who knows the family. "I get emotional every time I
think about it because the kids had nothing to do with it."

According to a DCF report, the 7-year-old son called his father a "monster" and feared the "monster was hiding under my bed."]

The report goes on to say that DCF was alerted in
September of 2007 that DeJesus "choked his wife and punched his
children's door, leaving a hole." When police arrived, DeJesus' wife
said, "Thank you, thank you. You saved me."

A DCF investigator said "he [DeJesus] is not capable of
controlling his temper and drinking habitat," and "the overall risk to
the children is high."

In Feb. of 2008, DeJesus' wife told case workers the
couple molested their children because "his family had shown their love
by touching the children's privates." She went on to say, "he made her
believe this was the way to show the children their love." DeJesus' wife
also said "she was afraid William would kill her if she refused."

Immediately, DCF removed the boys from the house. During
that time, the document says "both children expressed fear of their
biological parents."

During a scheduled visit, two workers reported DeJesus
"was observed to be aggressive toward the children and repeatedly placed
his hands in the children's groin areas as he played with and tossed
them around," citing that the children's erratic behavior "was due to
severe abuse and neglect." The report went on to say "exposing the boys
to their parents would be traumatic for them."

In 2009, the mother of the children recanted all of the molestation and sexual abuse charges.

The children were returned to their parents by DCF in
December of 2010. DCF ended all involvement with the DeJesus family,
saying there was no physical evidence on the children to prove that they
were sexually abused.

As far as last month's event, DCF claims there was
nothing they could have done to avoid it, saying the son with autism and
his other son were very young and could not speak when they were
investigating.

A DCF spokesperson was asked if there was a mistake made
on DCF's part by putting those two boys back with their mom and dad
based on what is now known. Joe Follick of DCF responded in a phone
interview, "The mother recanted and said, 'I made up those allegations,
it didn't occur.' At that point we had no physical signs of abuse."

DCF also says that since this case and the Barahona
case, they have changed their training practices for case workers so
children do not fall through the cracks.

At some point the "experts" should learn to listen to children.

Children are not afraid without reason.

Wife who survived Deerfield motor home horror may face charges

Deanna DeJesus ordered not to have contact with her surviving son, 7

FORT LAUDERDALE—

— The Port Orange woman who survived a double-murder suicide in Deerfield Beach two weeks ago will not be allowed to have any contact with another survivor of the tragedy, her 7-year-old son, a Broward judge ruled Friday.

Deanna De Jesus, 37, who was stabbed multiple times in the Feb. 9 incident at the Highland Woods RV Park, is under investigation and may face criminal charges in the case, according to a Broward Sheriff's detective who testified at a
child welfare hearing at the Broward courthouse Friday.

De Jesus was with her husband, William, and both their sons when they stopped at the RV park and knocked on the door of a motor home. Investigators say William De Jesus shot the man who answered the door, Ovila Plante, and took his
girlfriend hostage, bringing the De Jesus family into the motor home with him.

The hostage escaped, and hours later De Jesus stabbed his wife, both sons and himself. De Jesus and the older son, 9-year-old
Jeshiah, died. His wife and younger son were taken to North Broward Medical Center, where they recovered.

Eventually both mother and son were released, but child welfare officials have kept them apart since the murder-suicide.
In court Friday, Deanna De Jesus described a recent phone call with her surviving son, who is in protective custody.

"Mommy, how many cuts do you have?" she recalled the boy asking. "Baby, don't worry. I'm OK," she responded.

But Detective Valerian Perez told Broward Circuit Judge Kenneth Gillespie that the boy's mother may be at least partially responsible for the rampage that shocked the quiet community of snowbirds in Deerfield Beach.

"Revelations in this case will be made as soon as next week," said Perez. Detectives "have reason to believe that the mother
may have been culpable to some extent" in the violence that took place.

Perez could not offer any specifics, citing the open investigation.

But officials cited other reasons the mother and child should have no further contact, at least for now.

According to Department of Children and Families records cited in court, Deanna DeJesus accused her husband at least four years ago of sexually molesting both boys – the Sun Sentinel is not naming the surviving boy because of that allegation.

De Jesus wavered in her retelling of the molestation allegations, denying the reports' claim that she also
touched her sons inappropriately and indicating that her claims against
her husband were false.

"I realized it wasn't right and I took it back," she said.

While she claimed in court Friday that her husband's abuse before Feb. 9 was only mental, not physical, she also said she was in a home for battered women when she first raised the molestation claim.

DeJesus will be back in court next Friday as her mother, who lives in Central Florida, seeks custody of the surviving boy.

This woman lies so much she doesn't know what the truth is.

She doesn't deserve her son. He needs to be kept away from her. She is toxic.

Deputies: Central Florida mother 'stood by' while husband stabbed sons during S. Florida rampage

Deanna DeJesus, 37, was arrested in Seminole County and will face aggravated manslaughter charges in South Florida.

County authorities say she did nothing to stop her husband from stabbing
her two young sons. (Seminole County Sheriff's Office, Seminole County

Broward County authorities said a Central Florida mother "stood by" while her
husband stabbed their two young sons during a five-hour standoff at a
South Florida mobile home park last month.

Deanna Beauchamp DeJesus, 37, was arrested at her parents' Seminole County home by Lake Mary police Friday afternoon, said Sgt. Steve Towler. Detectives found her lying by the pool, he said.

She is expected to be moved to Broward County to face aggravated
manslaughter and child neglect charges in connection with the death of
her eldest son and the severe injuries of her youngest.

DeJesus' husband, William DeJesus of Port Orange, drove his family to a Deerfield
Beach RV park early February but the trip ended in a violent double
murder-suicide, according to authorities. Investigators said DeJesus
went to South Florida looking for drugs.

After killing a random
stranger, Canadian snowbird Oliva Plante, DeJesus took the man's
girlfriend and his family hostage inside a mobile home as Sheriff's
deputies tried to coax him out.

But DeJesus stabbed his two
children – 9-year-old Jeshiah and a 7-year-old– his wife and himself
before the Sheriff's Office SWAT team made entry and ended the rampage.
The other victim escaped.

Broward County sheriff's spokeswoman
Dani Moschella said DeJesus did nothing to stop her husband or call for
help for her dying son and "only protested when her husband stabbed
her."

"The attack did not take place in a split second," said
Moschella. "She had plenty of time to protect her children from their
attacker," she said.

DeJesus's younger son survived but has been separated from his mother in a foster home since being released from the hospital.
.
Upon her arrest, DeJesus did make a statement to detectives but Towler declined to release any details.
