Two arrested on rape, child neglect complaints in Muskogee County

FORT GIBSON — A 13-year-old boy armed himself with a knife, hid in a closet and called
police to report that a 9-year-old girl in his household was being
assaulted by a relative.

The Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office arrested two adults on complaints
of rape and child neglect Monday night at the home about three miles
east of Fort Gibson.

Jesse Wilson Sr., 64, and Jennifer Edwards, 28, are being held without bond at the Muskogee County City Detention Center.

Wilson Sr. was booked on complaints of rape, lewd molestation and
forcible sodomy. Edwards was booked on complaints of child endangerment,
neglect and failure to protect a child.

Both were intoxicated at the time of their arrest, Muskogee County Chief Deputy Joe Hughart said.

Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Moore said he anticipated filing charges Wednesday or Thursday.

Hughart commended the boy’s actions to protect the girl.

“It was very brave for a 13-year-old boy,” said Hughart. “I think he was
scared of (Wilson) and I think he took a knife for protection.”

Sheriff’s investigator Coletta Peyton is handling the interviews with
the children, who Hughart said are cooperating in the investigation.
They have been taken into protective custody.

Hughart said it had been at least seven days since the children had been in school.

“I think they were keeping them out because they were afraid some of this would come out,” Hughart said.

Hughart said it is law enforcement’s belief that Edwards knew of the abuse and did nothing about it.

There could be additional charges filed against Edwards and Wilson as well as additional arrests, Hughart said.

“They’re pretty traumatized,” Hughart said of the children. “They’re in
counseling sessions right now. The Department of Human Services is going
out of their way to take care of them.”
