In an unusual interview, Casey Anthony’s attorney Charles Greene apologized to Zenaida Gonzalez.

During a chat with WFTV-Channel 9 legal analyst Bill Sheaffer, Greene turned to the camera and said: “Miss Gonzalez, I apologize from the bottom of my heart and I’ll make sure Casey Anthony does, too, if you’ll dismiss this case.”

But both sides told Sheaffer they think Gonzalez’s defamation suit will end with a trial. Gonzalez is suing Anthony for linking her to the disappearance of Caylee Anthony.

Sheaffer conducted the sit-down interviews with both sides in the case before Judge Lisa Munyon delayed the trial to January. The trial had been scheduled to start next month.

Each side could be sure its message reached a wide audience through Sheaffer, a high-profile analyst during Anthony’s murder trial. In July, she was acquitted of murder in her daughter’s 2008 death.

Gonzalez attorney John Morgan dismissed the Anthony complaint that Gonzalez is seeking fame with the suit. “She was not anonymous when we met her. She was a kidnapping-murder suspect,” Morgan told Sheaffer.

Greene countered that Gonzalez isn’t seeking money because Anthony is unemployed and indigent. Greene added that Anthony “would love” to tell her story, but will do so on her terms.

Yet Gonzalez’s attorneys stressed it’s a matter of justice. “How long can the civil justice be held at bay?” Gonzalez attorney Keith Mitnik told Sheaffer. “We’re proceeding on with the trial and we’ll let the chips fall where they may.”

WESH-Channel 2 legal analyst Jeff Deen predicted the defamation suit will be dismissed. Attorney Deen said, “It’s one thing to say that you’ve been slandered or libeled by somebody. It’s another thing to say that you’ve been damaged because of that.”

Deen also added that Gonzalez has benefited from her TV appearances. She has taped a “Dr. Phil” show that will air next month.
