A Pierce County man was sentenced to 29 years in prison Friday for killing his girlfriend’s two-year-old daughter.

Charles Mann, 28, pled guilty to assault of a child and manslaughter
for causing the death of two-year-old Najaiyla Lowe on May 9, 2011.

“The defendant violated the mother’s trust and abused an innocent child,” said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist.

Mann was babysitting Najaiyla and the couple’s two-month-old baby on the evening the incident occurred.

Mann originally claimed the child drowned in the bathtub while he was tending to the baby in another room.

In an autopsy, Pierce County medical examiner Dr. Thomas Clark found a
large amount of blood in the child’s abdominal cavity and determined
that she died from internal bleeding caused by blunt force trauma to her abdomen.
