— A Pompano Beach mother was sentenced Friday to 25 years in prison for
slamming her 2-year-old daughter against a wall after the little girl
soiled herself. The child, Jayla Jackson, immediately
went limp after her head struck the wall, said prosecutor Nicole
Alvarez. Jayla has been on life support at Broward General Medical
Center ever since the Feb. 26, 2010, incident, brain dead with no
medical hope of recovery.

Keisha Jackson, 22, pleaded
guilty in February to one count of aggravated child abuse and one count
of child neglect. She told Broward Circuit Judge Andrew Siegel at her
sentencing hearing Friday that her daughter was throwing a tantrum
because Jackson was going to throw away the soiled underwear the little
girl was wearing.
"I turned around and I pushed her," Jackson said. "I didn't mean for her head to hit the wall like that."

But Jonathan Lawrence, the Broward sheriff's detective who
arrested Jackson, said the girl showed signs of abuse, including burn
and belt marks, that predated the incident that left Jayla clinging to
life. Jackson also admitted biting the girl at least seven times.
Lawrence struggled at one point to maintain his professional composure,
apologizing to the judge when he couldn't finish a thought. "I've
investigated numerous heinous crimes," he said, ranking Jackson's case
among the more difficult.
There was no deal with prosecutors, and
Jackson was asking Siegel for a lenient sentence. But Siegel decided a
harsher sentence was in order.
After her prison term is up,
Jackson will have to spend 10 years on probation. Upon her release, she
will have to take parenting classes, Siegel ruled.
There was no indication in court of what will happen next to the victim. Defense
lawyer Shlomi Presser said her family still held onto a glimmer of hope
for recovery, but Alvarez noted that recovery is not in Jayla's prognosis.
Because the criminal case is over, Jackson cannot be charged with murder if the victim dies.
