A Hamburg Township father accused of abusing his 9-month-old daughter cried Wednesday as he agreed to adjourn his criminal case.
Robert
George Albert, 25, is charged with first-degree child abuse for
allegedly harming his daughter. He was in court for a preliminary exam
conference, but his attorney, Heather Nalley, was not available so Judge
L. Suzanne Geddis adjourned the case at the request of an attorney
filling in for Nalley.
Hamburg Township Police Chief Rick Duffany
said his officers began investigating May 14 when state Department of
Human Services agents notified them about a possible child-abuse victim
at the University of Michigan Medical Center's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor.
The infant was undergoing a routine examination when medical personnel discovered "injuries that were suspicious," Duffany said.
"They
went through a complete physical and found numerous injuries that were
recent and old," he explained. "It was their belief (the infant) was a
victim of child abuse."
A three-week investigation led police to identify Albert as the alleged abuser.
Duffany declined to provide additional details, including the nature of the infant's injuries, due to the ongoing court case.
Michigan's
statute for first-degree child abuse, in part, defines the crime as
intentionally causing serious physical or mental harm to a child.
"Serious physical harm" is defined as any physical injury to a child
that
seriously impairs the child's health or physical well-being, including
brain damage, bone fracture, sprain, internal injury, poisoning or
severe cut.
Albert faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted as charged. He remains in the Livingston County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
