Casey Anthony: Lawson Lamar defends seeking death penalty

The Casey Anthony case continued to be a hot topic on weekend public-affairs programs.
State Attorney Lawson Lamar, who is seeking re-election, doled out praise and criticism about the Anthony prosecution on WKMG-Channel 6’s “Flashpoint” Sunday morning.
“Linda Drane Burdick did a great job on that case. She stayed calm, she stayed directed. She did what she should,” Lamar told Lauren Rowe.
But Lamar complained about “histrionics” in the case and said that prosecutor Jeff Ashton’s behavior during closing arguments “disturbed all of us.” Ashton is running against former boss Lamar.
“You don’t diss the defense lawyer and you don’t diss the solemnity of the courtroom,” Lamar said. “To laugh and chuckle during closing argument is something that I had warned him six times through that trial, with Linda, ‘Jeff, you’ve got to control your emotions.’ ”
Lamar added: “He didn’t control his emotions at the end. I don’t know what the ultimate effect was. It couldn’t have helped.”
Ashton will be a guest on “Political Connections” at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sunday on Central Florida News 13.
Lamar defended seeking the death penalty against Anthony, who was later acquitted of murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.
“Any time that you’ve got a case where you believe the defendant — morally, ethically – you believe the defendant is guilty, you should go for it. It belongs before a jury,” Lamar said. ”The fact that it was charged as a first degree does not mean that jury had only first degree as a choice.”
Lamar said he consulted with other prosecutors who agreed that the death penalty was called for because of expert testimony “that the tape was over little Caylee’s mouth and nose.”
The Anthony saga was a topic on WFTV-Channel 9’s “Central Florida Spotlight” on Saturday. Legal analyst Bill Sheaffer weighed in on Piers Morgan’s 10-minute phone conversation with Anthony, which Morgan relayed on CNN.
Sheaffer saw the interview as an attempt to “rehabilitate” and “massage” Anthony’s image as her probation for check fraud comes to an end. Sheaffer scoffed at the notion that Anthony might profit from a book.
“Jeff Ashton wrote the book first,” Sheaffer told Greg Warmoth. “The first one who writes the book and tells their story is usually the one that profits. And, by the way, now, after Jeff Ashton’s book, is anyone really going to believe anything that comes from her mouth?”
Sheaffer predicted it would be “hard if not impossible” for Anthony to rehabilitate her image because she remains “the most hated woman in the United States” a year after her acquittal.
“Central Florida Spotlight” repeats at 4 p.m. Sunday on WRDQ-Channel 27.
