FIRST ON 3: Autopsy confirms 3-year-old left at hospital died of blunt force trauma

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- An autopsy confirms that a three-year-old in Brunswick
County died earlier this year of blunt force trauma.

A man looking after Jaronn McAllister took the child to Brunswick
Novant Medical Center March 1 after waking up and finding the boy warm
to the touch. Montey Murray then reportedly left the hospital and led
police on a chase.

An autopsy report says McAllister died of blunt force trauma to the
abdomen, which damaged his liver. The investigation also found blunt
force trauma to the child's head and bruises on his scalp, but there
were no related internal head injuries.

District Attorney Jon David says McAllister's death is being
investigated as a homicide. So far, though, no one has been charged in
connection with the death. Murray is in charged in connection to the car
chase.

Jaronn Ledale McAllister's 35-pound body was mottled with bruises,
according to recently released results of the March autopsy on the
3-year-old.

Jaronn had contusions on his head, chest and abdomen, the report shows.
The trauma to his tiny torso led to at least five lacerations to his
liver, causing the boy to lose a cup of blood – one sixth of his body's
total – in the lining between his abdominal wall and internal organs.

Something happened in the hours between Jaronn's mother Candice Young's
departure to work from her Shallotte townhouse Feb. 29 at 11:30 p.m. and
the following morning just before 9 a.m. when her friend and overnight
babysitter Montey Murray brought Jaronn to the emergency room.
Everyone knows what happened once he got there.

The handsome little man with shining eyes and a contagious smile
grinning in pictures on his mother's Facebook page was pronounced dead.
After learning the child had died, Murray, 27, fled the hospital and led
officers on a car chase, according to police. He was ultimately
arrested on charges related to the chase. Murray's cousin, Jesse Holt,
34, who stayed at the apartment with him, was jailed on drug charges.

Holt has since been released. Murray remains in custody. Neither men
admitted harming the child, court documents show. Murray said he last
saw Jaronn at 4 a.m. when the boy pointed to marks on his stomach. Holt
said he and the boy played video games into the early morning before
Jaronn fell asleep on the couch then moved to the floor, according to a
search warrant affidavit.

The next morning Jaronn was unresponsive when Murray found him,
according to police. Murray summoned a neighbor, and the two delivered
the unconscious child to the hospital, the affidavit shows.

Now, four months after Jaronn's death, and on what would have been his
fourth birthday Monday, there have still been no charges filed in the killing.

"We are actually hoping that the evidence from the state lab will be
coming in this week," said Shallotte Police Chief Rodney Gause. "There
isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about this case."

He said Murray and Holt are the obvious main suspects, but until
evidence being processed by the State Bureau of Investigation comes
back, the investigation is at a standstill.

In the interim, he's in frequent contact with Jaronn's mother, as well
as paternal grandparents Vera and Ulysses McAllister, he said.

Attempts to reach Jaronn's family members were unsuccessful.

"I can't even imagine what the family is going through. I don't blame
them one bit if they are angry (at the delay)," he said. "This case is
not going to go away. We are going to make sure that justice is done."

Moving this to Abused (Resulting in Death) based on the autopsy results. If the charges are increased to Murder, we can always change again.

I'm sure they are going to indict him. Probably not in a rush though since he is locked up.

Brunswick Co. Grand Jury indicts man for killing 3-year-old

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) -- A Brunswick County Grand Jury indicted Montey Murray for first degree murder and child abuse in connection with the death of 3-year-old Jaron McAllister.

Investigators say Murray was babysitting the boy when he died in March 2012.
An autopsy shows McAllister died from internal bleeding due to blunt force trauma.

District Attorney Jon David says this day has been a longtime coming. He says Murray has been continuously incarcerated since the incident which has allowed investigators the luxury of time to be thorough and extensively investigate the facts.

"I say this not only as a district attorney but a father myself, when you are dealing with the death of a 3-year-old child it gets a lot of people in the system motivated to do everything they can to seek maximum justice and full justice. I think that this is an important first step in the process today," said David.
The District Attorney said it is too early to determine what punishment he will pursue.

Murray is being held without bond and is due back in court September 10th.
