Oak Forest man gets 13 years in DuPage child sex abuse case

An Oak Forest man who authorities say sexually abused a young girl over a four-year period was sentenced today to 13 years in prison, according to DuPage County prosecutors.

In a negotiated plea, Luis Pereira, 48, admitted guilt to one count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse before Judge Daniel Guerin.

He had been charged with abusing the young girl at her home in Hanover Park beginning in 2002 and continuing through 2006. The girl later confided the abuse to a therapist, which led to the investigation by police and the DuPage County Children’s Advocacy Center, prosecutors said.

Pereira was charged in March and has been held in lieu of $250,000 bail.

State’s Attorney Robert Berlin lauded the victim for her courage throughout the prosecution.

 “For four years, this young victim endured repeated sexual abuse from a man whom she thought could be trusted,” Berlin said.
“Thanks to her courage however, Mr. Pereira will be held accountable for what he did.”

Pereira must serve about 9 1/2 years before he is eligible for parole. Following his release from prison he will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, prosecutors said.
