Michigan woman suffocated newborn girl after surprise birth: police 

Melissa Mitin, 24, gave birth at an Okemos home early Dec. 26 then brought the lifeless newborn to a hospital, according to police. She suffocated the child to conceal the birth, which she allegedly did not expect.

A Michigan woman who did not know she was pregnant suffocated her newborn baby after the surprise birth at an Okemos home late last year, prosecutors say.

Melissa Mitin, 24, brought the dead baby girl to a Lansing hospital early Dec. 26 after she murdered the baby just minutes after it took its first breaths, according to a court hearing transcript obtained by the Lansing State Journal.

The county medical examiner later determined the death was “homicide due to a positional asphyxiation or due to a positional cause,” though how exactly the baby was suffocated remains unclear. Police believe the baby’s killing “had been intentional - or intentional acts involved in an attempt conceal this birth,” according to the newspaper.

Mitin was not arrested until May 12, but faces up to life in prison on the murder charge. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June.

Mitin remains free after posting $5,000 bond.
