READING, Ohio —A Reading teenager is accused of killing his infant stepsister.

The 14-year-old boy is charged with felonious assault and murder in connection with the June 25 smothering death of the 2-month-old

Both are children of Reading Councilman Scott Heckle.

"The mom was on the porch and she was hysterical and upset," neighbor Kori Wetherald said.

Reading neighbors said they remember the tragedy of June 25 vividly.

"I saw her come out on a board and she was limp and it was heartbreaking. I found out the next day that she had passed away and it was very sad," Wetherald said.

According to court documents, the teen admitted using a pillow to cover the infant’s head and face while she was sleeping.

The teen said he did it because he heard voices telling him to do so, according to the court documents.

"They are deeply crushed with the loss of their daughter and now deeply crushed with this," Mayor Robert Bemmes said.

Bemmes said the city is grieving along with the first-term councilman and they will continue to stay by his side as justice takes its course.

"We're family here. We'll all do our best to get through this. And as family Jessica and all of their family was in my house just a week ago all of them and gain they're a joy to be around, so this community will get them through this," Beemes said.

The teen was arrested on July 12. He is in juvenile detention and is scheduled for a competency hearing on July 23.

Beemes said Heckle has taken the last few weeks to be with his family during this difficult time.
