Mother charged in 4-year-olds death in Hickory

HICKORY, N.C. – Nearly two months after a boy died from injuries sustained from a near-drowning, the child’s mother was charged with child abuse and manslaughter.
On Tuesday, Catawba County authorities served a true bill of indictment on Kelli Elizabeth Ledford, 31, of 4023 Hickory-Lincolnton Highway, Newton, for felony child abuse and felony involuntary manslaughter.

Ledford and her son, 4-year-old Logan Putnam, were visiting Lookout Shoals Lake on May 24 when the incident happened.
Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid told the Hickory Daily Record that Putnam was swimming with other children when the incident occurred. Putnam spent 10 minutes underwater before being recovered from the lake.
He was rushed to the hospital where he died two days later.
According to the indictment, brain damage suffered from being underwater was a factor in the child’s death.
The indictment says Ledford showed “a reckless disregard for human life by committing willful acts and grossly negligent omissions, failing to supervise children who were playing in Lookout Shoals Lake and failing to equip children … with personal floatation devices …”
Ledford was already confined in the Burke-Catawba jail when she was indicted.
She has several pending charges from Burke County including felony charges for robbery with a dangerous weapon and accessory after the fact.
Those charges stem from a larceny in early March where Ledford and a man allegedly used a knife to steal a laptop computer from Walmart in Morganton.
Ledford also has charges for misdemeanor larceny and possession of stolen goods.
She was released from jail March 18. However, she was placed back in jail after her bond was surrendered June 5, shortly after Putnam’s death.
Ledford is being held in jail under a $100,000 secured bond.
