A 24-year-old Marion County man has been charged with having sex with a girl at a Volusia County motel after developing an online relationship with her.

Devin Taylor Schmidtke of Fort McCoy began chatting with the 13-year-old girl several months ago, New Smyrna Beach police Sgt. Eugene Griffith said in an email Wednesday.

Schmidtke was charged with having sex with a minor and traveling to entice a child, Griffith said.

He allegedly had sex with the girl July 22 at a hotel in the 1100 block of N. Dixie Freeway, also known as U.S. Highway 1.

He drove two hours from Marion to Volusia to meet the child.

Then they had sex several times at the motel, police said.


"The young girl's family discovered inappropriate messages on her cell phone and notified police,'' Griffith said.

Schmidtke was arrested by the Marion County Sheriff's Office after police obtained a warrant.
