Police: Father shoots and stabs daughter in Md. shooting

11:51 p.m. EDT August 18, 2014

TEMPLE HILLS Md. (WUSA9) -- Two people were shot and a man and his 3-year-old daughter are dead after Prince George's County responded to the report of a double-shooting in Temple Hills, Saturday morning.

Police have identified the suspect as Frederick Roy Miller, 38, of the 8000 block of Allandale Drive in Landover.

Authorities responded to the 4200 block of Farmer Place in Temple Hills, where Miller shot and critically injured a man and a woman. Both of the victims have life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital, police said.

The investigation shows while police were still at the scene of the shooting, they started pursuing the suspect/shooter, who was driving a Nissan Altima, authorities said.

The suspect stopped at Beech Rd. and Branch Ave., where an exchange of gunfire happened, police said. The suspect then stopped again in the 4600 block of Branch Avenue, where another exchange of gunfire happened, police said. The suspect was shot and killed, authorities said.

Police found a 3-year-old girl, Miller's daughter, in the car, suffering from gunshot wounds. Based on the investigation, Miller stabbed and shot his daughter.

Prince George's County Police Chief Mark Magaw said in a press conference Monday that police believe the girl was alive and with Miller when he left the house based on surveillance footage from a neighboring home. Magaw said he has little doubt the girl was stabbed in the vehicle and then shot from close range while police were in pursuit.

Authorities said the woman shot is the great grandmother and man shot is the grandfather of the child. Both victims are in grave condition, police said.

No officers were injured in the incident. Authorities said six officers were involved in this shooting. The involved officers have been identified as: Patrol Officer Alba De Jesus, assigned to District IV, Corporal Clarence Black, a 12-year veteran assigned to the District IV Special Assignment Team, Patrol Officer Brett Fairbrother, who's been with the department for a year and currently assigned to District IV, Corporal Paul Schweinsburg, a seven-year veteran assigned to the Regional Investigation Division and Patrol Officer Christopher Gehlhausen of District IV, who's been with the PGPD for three years.

Authorities said all of the officers are with the Prince George's County Police Department.

Master Trooper Williard Shelton with the Maryland State Police, a 17-year veteran was also involved in the shootout.

All of the officers and the trooper are on routine administrative leave, authorities said.

The shooting is still under investigation, police said. The motive behind the incident is still being investigated. Authorities said, the 3-year-old's mother was not at the scene of the shooting and was not hurt. The girl's mother had custody of her daughter, police said.

It is still unclear why and when the father killed his daughter.

Police: Man Shot, Slit 3-Year-Old Daughter’s Throat In Temple Hills

August 18, 2014 5:58 PM

LAILA MILLER - 3 yo (8/2014) - / Suspect: Father; Frederick Miller - Temple Hills MD Laila-miller

TEMPLE HILLS , Md. (WJZ)– There are gruesome new details in the death of a three-year-old little girl. Laila Miller is dead after her father shot at her family, murdered her and led police on a chase.

Three-year-old Laila Miller was found inside the car with a gunshot wound and her throat slit—and investigators say there’s no doubt her own father is behind the slaying.

Police say 38-year-old Marine veteran Frederick Miller is behind a gruesome rampage that took the life of his three-year-old daughter.

“I don’t know how you deal with the emotional, the physical pain of losing a three-year-old,” said Chief Magaw.

Saturday afternoon, Miller went to the home where Laila lived with her grandparents and mother. Police say he shot her maternal grandfather and then walked inside the house and fired at her great-grandmother. Neighbors watched one of the neighbors drop in the driveway.

“He was laying on the ground on his stomach,” said a neighbor.

Police say surveillance video from a neighbor’s security camera showed Miller walking out of the house with Laila. Then he took off.

“Miller fled from the officers and a pursuit ensued,” said Major Jason Johnson.

Miller pulled over twice and exchanged gunfire with police. The second time, he was fatally struck. Inside the car, though, a heartbreaking discovery.

“Somewhere in the middle of the chase, he made a conscious decision to kill his daughter,” said Magaw.

Three-year-old Laila was shot in the head and her throat was slit. Shortly after, she died in a nearby hospital.

Police say the bullet used was not consistent with any fired by officers. A knife with blood was also found inside the car.

“There’s no one else who could have killed this baby girl other than her father,” Magaw said.

Neighbors say domestic problems were growing at the house. WJZ pored through documents dating back to 2011 showing Miller was engaged in a custody battle with the girl’s mother.

Investigators say this is the writing on the wall for how easily domestic problems can take a tragic turn.

Police say they had no prior contact with the family about any domestic problems.

Both grandparents remain in critical condition.

The girl’s mother was not present at the time of the shooting. She was found unharmed.

The officers involved in the shooting were not injured. All six were placed on administrative leave.
