Madison mom frantic about missing baby

"MADISON -- The mother of a missing baby said that the teen who took her child "wanted a baby real bad."

"She was going around saying she was pregnant, but she's not," said Makeela King, 16.

But, King said that she trusted the woman who took the baby.

Madison Police Chief Steven Shelby said the teenager, Danielle Medina, may be eluding authorities after running afoul of the law in New York, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
"It's possible she may be on the run from maybe some charges up in New York City," Shelby said as the search for the teen was under way Monday.

"We're asking for public assistance because that's the only thing that can help us right now," Shelby said. "People can keep their eyes and ears open near public transportation, hotels or anything like that."
Shelby said police believe Medina may be in the O'Fallon and East St. Louis area, where her boyfriend lives, or on her way to New York, where she resided before moving to the metro-east.
Medina is wanted on an outstanding felony robbery and grand larceny warrant in New York where she has previously been convicted of child endangerment, Shelby said.

MADISONM IL (KTVI-FOX2now.com) - There were new clues Monday night in
the search for a baby boy and his suspected kidnapper. A SARAA alert
remained in effect in the disappearance of 5-month-old Cortez Rose of
Madison, Illinois. One potential clue did not pan out. Surveillance
video from a bus stop up the road in Granite City turned out to be
video of someone else. Police still had other leads.

The boy's family was out trying to scrape up more.

"We're going around everywhere trying to find him," said the boy's
Godmother, Tyanna Staple, showing pictures of Cortez and his suspected
kidnapper, Danielle Medina, 17, to customers at a local grocery store.

The boy's mother, Makeela Rose, 16, cried as customers said Medina looked familiar but they hadn't seen her with the baby.

She hadn't seen her little boy since Saturday.

She admitted letting Medina take the boy for a walk in a brown and tan stroller. The stroller had yet to be recovered Monday.

Medina came to the area from New York with her boyfriend a few months ago, authorities said.

She left a home in 15-hundred block of 5th street in Madison with the child and never came back.

"I'm hurt. It's my fault," the boy's mother cried. "I'm like, 'there he
goes'. I never should have left him leave with her. And I should have
just taken him with me like I started to [do]."

Medina is short, about 5'0" tall, 120lbs, with black and orange bangs in her hair.

She's now wanted on an arrest warrant for aggravated kidnapping in Madison County; bail set at $500,000.

Cortez Rose has birthmarks on his right shoulder and right ankle.
Authorities say he was wearing and red shirt and his diaper when he
disappeared.

People have reported Medina and the baby at a bus stop in Granite City
and most recently at the Orr-Weathers and Norman E. Owens housing
developments in East St. Louis.

Authorities were focusing their search there Monday and getting help from the neighbors.

"...knocking on doors on some suspect houses where we think the
abductor might be hiding at or staying at right now and her boyfriend,"
said Madison police chief, Steven Shelby.

"Me and one of my friends, we've been scouting the areas, trying to see
if the young lady maybe put the baby in a trash [dumpster]," said
resident, Derex Brooks. "And not just that - going door to door, trying
to find out her whereabouts."

"I just hope if she watches [the news] and she sees how hurt I am and
she brings my baby back," the baby's mother said through tears.

The case hit the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's website.

Authorities said they did not know of a motive. They did not believe Medina intended to harm the baby.

Her past felonies in New York include child endangerment.

Officers
from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Service
are helping the Madison, Ill. police department in their search for an
infant and his suspected kidnapper. Police activated a regional
abduction alert on Sunday in the disappearance of Cortez Rose. The
five-month-old was last spotted with his 17-year-old babysitter,
Danielle Medina, at the bus stop at 19th Street in Granite City. Medina
is an acquaintance of the infant's mother. Cortez was wearing
a red T-shirt and diaper; he has birth marks on his right arm near his
shoulder and right ankle. Medina is a black female, five feet tall, and
120 pounds. She was wearing a long brown shirt, black leggings, and
carrying a gray purse, and pushing Cortez in a large brown stroller.
She has an orange and black weave in her hair. Madison police
chief Steven Shelby said officers are still treating the case as a
kidnapping. Medina lacks the resources to travel far, he said, and they
believe she is still in the Metro East. Anyone with
information on the whereabouts of Medina or Cortez Rose is asked to

"FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - At around 6:30pm Tuesday night police found a missing baby from St. Louis in Fort Wayne. The baby was taken into the care of the Department of Child Services.
CBS affiliate, KMOV in St. Louis is reporting the baby to be five month old Cortez Rose. KMOV said the U.S. Marshals found the baby inside the Fort Wayne home at 456 Taber Street. Reportedly there were 13 people inside.

Missing Madison baby found in Indiana; babysitter in custody

"A 5-month-old Madison boy who was kidnapped by his babysitter was found "in excellent health" on Tuesday in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The U.S. Marshal Service located Danielle Medina, 17, at about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday at a residence in Indiana, and took her into custody.
Medina was charged Monday with aggravated kidnapping after Cortez L. Rose was reported missing on Saturday.
