An Elsmere man appeared in Kenton District Court Tuesday to answer
to an assault charge and found out that prosecutors had amended it to
murder.

Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Brian Richmond said defendant
Matthew Pyles, 26, beat to death his son, 7-month-old Gaige Pyles. The infant died of brain injuries earlier this month after being rushed to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.Judge
Douglas Grothaus then ordered Pyle to be held without bond. He had been
held at the Kenton County jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond.Pyle waived a preliminary hearing and the case was sent to a grand jury.He was arrested on Aug. 16 after Gaige Pyles was taken to the hospital, but before he died.Investigators
said the injuries to the child happened at a home in the 1027 block of
Pebble Creek Drive. Authorities said the baby's mother and Pyles first
took the child to St. Elizabeth in Florence. The baby was then
transferred to Children's Hospital, where he died.Few other details have been released about the death.Pyles is at least the fourth man in Northern Kentucky with charges pending against him related to he death of an infant.

An Elsmere man was convicted Friday of shaking and killing his infant son.
A jury found 27-year-old Matthew Pyles guilty of second-degree

Pyles will be sentenced during a May 17 hearing.
Investigators said Pyles brought his lifeless 7-month-old son Aug. 15,
2009, to Saint Elizabeth Hospital Florence.
Gaige Pyles was later taken to Children's Hospital, prosecutors said,
where he died two days later from head injuries.
Johnna Town, the child's mother, said that when Pyles picked her up from
work, her son was having a seizure in the back seat of the car.
She said Pyles admitted to shaking the child, and he was charged with
murder.
