DUBLIN — Maddi and Mike Misheloff never wanted or sought attention, but they need it.Since
their daughter Ilene, then 13, was kidnapped off the streets of Dublin
21 years ago, they have needed to keep her name in the spotlight.On
Thursday, for the 21st time, the Misheloff will participate in an
annual vigil organized by family and friends to keep Ilene's name fresh
in the minds of the public with the hope that it will spark a tip.The
Misheloffs will walk with between 100 and a few hundred people along
the route from Wells Middle School to St. Raymond Catholic Church —
approximately the same route Ilene took when she was headed to the
Dublin Iceland rink for lessons after school Jan. 30, 1989. "It's
excruciatingly painful," said Maddi Misheloff about the vigil. "Our
purpose is to do this every year until we have her back to let people
know that we are still looking."An added burden hangs over this
year's vigil. Maddi lost her father in 2009, shortly after Jaycee
Dugard walked into a Concord police station.When the Dugard case
broke in August, it thrust the Misheloffs' story and Ilene's name back
into the headlines. The case of Dugard, who was abducted from the Lake
Tahoe area 18 years ago and was found alive and living in Antioch,
sparked hundreds of leads for the Misheloffs."Any time something like that comes up we get a lot of media attention," said Dublin police Sgt. Nate Smith, who has beenthe
lead investigator on the Misheloff case. "It generates more calls, and
gets more people thinking, and the chance of more possible tips."The
Misheloffs have learned over the years not to get emotional over tips.
The Dugard case was no different, but it left the Misheloffs optimistic."It's
not like we ever lost our hope," said Mike Misheloff. "It just
strengthened it. Ilene has been missing a long time and Jaycee was
missing a long time, too. If this can happen with Jaycee, the same
thing can happen with Ilene."But making it through Thursday's vigil and the 21st anniversary of Ilene's kidnapping doesn't get easier."We don't have any proof that she isn't (alive)," Maddi said. "We can't give up on our child; that is not an option."It is why they walk every year and send out hundreds of fliers."We
try and not to focus on worrying too much," Mike said of the
anniversary. "We distract ourselves. We are going to make sure we have
some place to go that day to keep our minds off it."

She was walking home from school in Dublin, California, at approximately 3pm when she disappeared. Witnesses recall seeing her walking alone on Amador Valley Boulevard near Village Parkway that afternoon, but she was not seen again after that time. Ilene's key fob was later found near the entrance to John Mape Park (Shown Below), which was along the route she typically took to her home. REMARKS At the time of her disappearance, Misheloff was wearing braces on her teeth. She had pierced ears, freckles on her cheeks and the bridge of her nose, and a small lump on the inside of her left ankle. She was last seen wearing a charcoal gray pullover "Esprit" polo sweater, a pink and charcoal gray skirt with horizontal stripes, and black low-top "Keds" sneakers. Vigil Monday night will honor girl abducted in 1989

DUBLIN, Calif. -- Ilene Misheloff was 13 years old when she disappeared in Dublin more than two decades ago, but her family continues to search for their daughter.



A candlelight vigil and ecumenical prayer service to be held Monday night will mark the 23rd anniversary of Ilene's disappearance.

On the day she disappeared, Ilene had left school early after being excused from a physical education class, according to her family.

She walked home alone, and was last seen at the intersection of San Ramon Road and Amador Valley Boulevard.

Monday's vigil will retrace her steps along that route, beginning at Wells Middle School at 6800 Penn Drive.

Mike and Maddi Misheloff, along with Ilene's twin brother, Brian, will lead the walk as they have done every year since Ilene went missing.

The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. and will conclude with a short prayer service at St. Raymond Catholic Church at 11555 Shannon Ave. in Dublin.

The Misheloffs say they are hoping someone has information and will come forward.
