"Jane" MEDLIND - 2 yo - Mount Airy/Charlotte NC

A young mother woman was charged with child neglect after her
2-year-old daughter, clad only in a diaper, was found wandering along a
road.

Officers eventually tracked down the girl's mother, Tammy Medlind, at a bar in Mount Airy.

"I found her in the middle of the road in a disposable diaper and
that's it," said a passerby who stopped and called 911 around 4:30 p.m.
"No shoes, no other clothes ... carrying a baby doll."

Deputies said the passerby spent 20 minutes going door-to-door before calling 911 for help.

Eventually, sheriff's officials tracked down the girl's grandparents, who suggested Medlind was likely at a bar.

"Our officers went out, spent about two hours going door to door, and
couldn't find anyone who knew the child or where the child belonged or
anybody that might be responsible for the child," said Surry County
Sheriff Graham Atkinson.

The girl's grandparents said Medlind and her daughter were visiting from Charlotte.

"They weren't regular visitors there. No prior arrangements had been
made with the grandparents to look out for the child," said Atkinson.

"The grandparents believe that when the mother left, that she'd taken the child with her."

Police said Medlind drove drunk and without a license to Massey Rd., where deputies were waiting with her daughter.

In addition to the child neglect charge, Medlind was charged with
driving under the influence and driving with a revoked license.
