Three Chicago children missing for nearly a year and a half have been found safe in Mexico City.
Police say the children, 11-year-old Fernando, 7-year-old Karla and
6-year-old Oscar Casanova were last seen near their school in April of
2008. The children's mother, Sophia Garcia, was found dead in the family home that same day. Police say the children were flown back from Mexico and they're with relatives.Police believe the father of two of the children, Benito Casanova,
abducted the kids and may have killed their mother. He's still missing.

Three children missing since their mother was slain in 2008 on the Northwest
Side were found in Mexico and flown back to family in Chicago on Friday.
Their father, who had been named in an arrest warrant on child
abduction charges, is not in custody and Chicago police continue to
investigate the homicide, according to Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti of
Police News Affairs. No one has been charged in the homicide.
Sofia Garcia, 30, was found dead April 22, 2008, hanged and with a plastic
bag over her head in her home in the 1700 block of North Harding
Avenue. Her children -- Fernando Casanova, then 11, Karla Casanova,
then 7, and Oscar Casanova, then 6 -- were the subject of an Amber
Alert, which was canceled Friday night.
Ursitti said the children are safe and have been placed with a
family member after being flown back from Mexico City. Further details
about how they were found were not being released at this time.
Detectives from the Grand-Central Area continue to investigate the homicide, she said.
Garcia had an active order of protection against the children's
father, Benito Casanova, then 31, when she was found slain. Benito
Casanova has not been charged in the homicide but a few days after the
slaying he was named in a no-bond arrest warrant on charges of child
abduction.
On April 25, 2008, Chicago police said the warrant was not related
to Garcia's slaying, and on Friday Ursitti would say only that the
investigation was continuing.
A few days after the slaying a security camera from a gas station
showed Casanova and the children, and authorities speculated that he
had taken them to Mexico where he had family.
