"Jane Doe" - 3 yo - Chesapeake VA

A 3-year-old Chesapeake girl remains in critical condition while the man who had been caring for her is charged with felony child abuse.

The girl, who has not been identified to the media. remains critical at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk,
where she was transferred after being initially taken to Maryview
Hospital in Portsmouth last Wednesday. Police spokeswoman Dorienne
Boykin said the girl appeared to have suffered severe trauma to the
head.

Leon Lamar Surgeon, a 38-year-old Chesapeake man, is charged with felony child abuse and aggravated malicious wounding.

Boykin said officers came to a residence on Clover Meadows Drive
after receiving a report of an unresponsive child. Medics and officers
found Surgeon, who said he was caring for the child while her mother
was at work. The child was transported to the hospital and Surgeon was
subsequently arrested. No further details on the circumstances of her
injury have been reported.
