Less than an hour after an emotional plea by his mother, a
2-week-old baby who went missing late Monday night has been found alive
and unharmed.
Conway Police spokeswoman Catina Hipp announced just before 4 p.m.
Tuesday, 16 hours after Sharawn Jerod Chestnut Jr. went missing from
his home on Duckett Street, he was returned to his mother alive and
unharmed.
Family spokeswoman Bernadette Baker, the infant's great aunt, said
Tuesday afternoon that two people have been arrested in connection to
the infant's disappearance. The arrests, however, have not been
confirmed by Conway Police.
Baker says the baby was found in a plastic bag under the seat of a
truck located in the parking lot of the Shoney's restaurant in Conway.
Baker said a best friend of the mother took the infant and planned to
pass Sharawn off as her own.
According to Conway Police, officers were called to the Duckett
Street home just after midnight Tuesday. The mother, Criche Nelson,
told police she put her 1-year-old daughter and Sharawn to bed around
11 p.m. When she checked on them an hour later, the newborn was missing.
Officers searched the area Tuesday, but were unable to find Sharawn.
At 3 p.m. Tuesday, Conway Police, Sharawn's mother and great aunt held
a press conference pleading with the public to help find the infant.
Less than an hour later, Hipp announced Sharawn had been found unharmed and returned to his mother.

A Conway woman claiming to be 9 months pregnant has been charged in connection with the kidnapping of a two week old baby.

Annette Melissa Rich, 30, of 1204 Carver St. appeared before Judge
Andy Hendrick Wednesday morning where he a set surety bond of $75,000
for kidnapping Sharawn Jarod Chestnut, Jr. after the boy’s mother,
Criche Nelson, reported him missing from their home on Duckett Street
early Tuesday morning.

Police said Nelson told them she put Chestnut and his one-year-old
sister in bed about 11:00 p.m. Monday. When she checked on them about
midnight, she told police her son was missing.

Officers searched the area surrounding the house, but were unable to locate the child.

Conway police held a news conference Wednesday at 3 p.m. along with
the family, asking for the public’s help finding Chestnut. About an
hour after the news conference, police say Chestnut was found and
returned to his mother, unharmed.

According to detectives, Rich told them Tuesday afternoon she had no
idea where the baby was, but a witness said she saw a baby inside of a
car.

Police followed leads and found the car and the baby in a bag.

Detectives said Rich was planning to take Chestnut behind the Coca Cola plant.

Today in court, Rich said she has three kids of her own, ages 14,
9, and 5 and claims that she is nine months pregnant, two weeks overdue.

Chestnut’s mother was in court today and said she has known Rich for two years as a friend.

Rich’s next court date is Jan. 8th.

The judge ordered Rich to have no contact with the victim or her family.

Baby Sharawn’s mother says her two week old baby is doing just fine.

The woman accused of kidnapping
a Conway infant boy Tuesday told a judge she didn't like the way the
child's mother was raising him, so she took him.Conway
police charged Annette Rich, a 30-year-old mother of three, with
kidnapping a two-week-old boy from his Duckett Street home as he slept. At a bond hearing Wednesday a judge set bail at $75,000.Police said Rich abducted Sharawn Jarod Chestnut Jr. between 11:00 p.m. Monday and midnight Tuesday.Chestnut's mother, Criche Nelson, said she has known Rich for about two years and that the two were friends.
"I never thought she would have did something like this," Nelson said
Wednesday. "That's the last person that I would've thought would've
done something like that."Nelson said she knows Rich feels stupid for what she did and hopes she's sentenced to plenty of time in prison.
"I'm just thinking of all the possibilities that could have happened if she
wasn't caught, like her getting away with my child or any harm that
could have been caused to him," Nelson said.Conway
police said a 911 caller tipped off police to Rich's whereabouts around
3:15 p.m. Tuesday. Within minutes, police stopped a pickup truck on
Mill Pond Road near U.S. Highway 501, and inside they found Rich in the
passenger's seat and Sharawn in a canvas grocery bag under a seat. The
driver was questioned by police but later released.Police
said Rich admitted to taking the child and said she was taking it
behind the old Coca-Cola plant in Conway. Whether she planned on
getting rid of the child or taking it to raise as her own, police did
not know.Rich's next court appearance is January 8, 2010.

A $75,000 bond was set yesterday for a Conway woman who was charged
with kidnapping an infant out of its bed Monday night.
Annette Melissa Rich, 30, who previously lived in Boundary Street, was
taken before Municipal Judge Andy Hendrick for a bond hearing after she
was charged with taking 2-week old Sharawn Jarod Chestnut Jr. The baby
was found 16 hours later in a fabric shopping bag in Rich’s car. Police
told Hendrick she later admitted to taking the baby. Chestnut’s mother,
Criche Nelson, reported the baby missing early Tuesday morning after
finding he was not in his bed.
Conway Police called a press conference Tuesday afternoon to get the
child’s photo out and encourage anyone with information to call the
police department. Less than an hour after the press conference, a
woman called 911 saying she saw someone take the baby and put him in a
car.
The woman relayed the license plate number and make of the vehicle to
police, officials said. Officials said they were able to find the baby
and return him unharmed to his mother. Bernadette Baker, the great-aunt
of the missing boy, said she doesn’t understand why Rich, who has three
children of her own, would have taken the baby.
“We have forgiven her and will pray for her children,” Baker said.
Nelson, who before the incident considered Rich a family friend, said
she is just happy to have her baby back.
“I still can’t believe this happened...No one should take someone
else’s child,” Nelson said.
When the child was reported missing, the Conway Police Department
called in the State Law Enforcement Division to help with the search,
said Catina Hipp, Conway Police Department’s public information
officer.
An Amber Alert was not issued because the case did not meet the
criteria. The criteria for an Amber Alert, according to SLED, is that
the law enforcement agency believes that the child has been abducted,
the child is 17-years-old or younger and in immediate danger of serious
bodily harm or death, all other possibilities for the victim’s
disappearance have been reasonably excluded and sufficient information
is available to disseminate to the public that could assist in locating
the victim, suspect or vehicle used in the abduction.
Police told Hendrick that Rich has never been in serious trouble before
and they do not consider her a flight risk. Hendrick told Rich if she
makes bond she is not to have any contact with the child or his family.
