Charged with assault of a child, a 21-year-old
Federal Way man has been jailed on allegations that he pummeled his
girlfriend's 6-month-old son.
On Nov. 17, Federal Way police were called to Mary Bridge Children's
Hospital after the infant's father reported deep bruises at various
locations on the baby's body.
Having received the child for a supervised visit, the boy's father
immediately noticed yellow-brown bruises on the child's head, face and
neck, according to court documents. The child's genitals were also
deeply bruised. So were his chest and shoulders.
Shortly after the report was received, officers found the child's
mother and Thomas S. Nichols at a Sonic Drive-In at Bonney Lake.
The woman allegedly told officers that Nichols, her boyfriend,
provided most of the care for the boy because of her work schedule,
prosecutors say. Nichols initially denied harming the child, then
allowed that he might have accidentally bruised him while trying to
feed him.
Challenged about the numerous bruises on the boy, Nichols became agitated, Detective Richard Kim wrote in court documents.
"Soon after being confronted about the other bruises, Nichols
invokes his (Miranda) rights," Kim said. "As a matter of normal
process, I walked into the audio room to turn the video off and
overheard … Nichols utter, 'Get ready to go to jail Thomas!' as he
cracked his knuckles."
On Friday, King County prosecutors charged Nichols with second-degree assault of a child. He remains jailed on $100,000 bail.
