A scary story had a good ending for the holidays for a missing boy and the Good Samaritan who found him.
When a 10-year-old boy went missing at the end of the day from
Brookhollow School on Wednesday, the search for him began. Police,
sheriff's deputies, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers,
citizens and representatives from all kinds of agencies spent the next
several hours combing Lufkin, hoping for the best but fearing the worst.
As night fell early for the winter evening, helicopters circled the
Brookhollow neighborhood with infrared cameras, and police dogs
searched the woods. Police officers continued fanning out across town,
checking everywhere they could think of.
Neighbors in the Brookhollow area wanted to join in, including Chris
Logan and Kim Simmons, coworkers from the Alcohol and Drug Abuse
Council of Deep East Texas.
Logan said one of his sons had called to tell him about the missing
boy, and right after he got home from work, he and his wife, Laura,
were talking about it — as helicopters circled overhead.
Logan and Simmons decided they would try to find out how they could help.
"She was going to go over to the school to see if there was any kind of search party, or efforts being put together," he said.
There were lots of cars moving around, but they couldn't find out
anything, so the two decided to just start looking. After 45 minutes
without turning anything up, they decided to split up. Logan went back
to his truck.
"I turned around to go back home, and he was right there in front of
me, with his backpack on," Logan said. "It kind of took me a little
whilte to register that it was actually him."
Logan said he found the missing boy between Hummingbird and Bluebird streets, moving away from Brookhollow.
"I rolled down the window and asked him what his name was, and he
said, 'Andrew.' I asked him what his last name was. ... I said, 'Did
you know there's a lot of people looking for you?'"
Lufkin Police Lt. David Young said the boy told police he was hiding
in the woods and got scared because he thought he'd in get trouble, so
he didn't call out to searchers.
Logan was on the phone with Simmons when he found the boy.
"I just couldn't believe what was happening. I told her to get over
there right away. But then I got him right in m truck no problem, and
just took off and drove him to Brookhollow," Logan said. "We got in the
middle of the crowd and I said, 'I found him!' His mom came running up,
and that was it. It was surreal."
Logan said the boy's mom came by ADAC Thursday morning for a big thank you, which included a dozen Shipley doughnuts.
Logan said he didn't talk to the boy on the quick ride back to
school — he was too focused on getting him safely to his parents. But
according to his mother, apparently the child had been afraid of
getting in trouble over some homework problems, then was more afraid
when he saw police looking for him. It was the search dogs who flushed
him out of the woods, according to what a Lufkin Police detective told
him, Logan said.
"He thought he was going to get in bigger trouble, so he (had) just stayed hidden," Logan said.
Having two children of his own, and Simmons also having children of
her own, Logan said they just couldn't wrap their minds around what it
must have been like to have a child go missing.
Logan said they had decided recently not to let one of their
children ride a bike alone to school, just being too uncomfortable for
his safety.
"And then this happened. It was pretty wild. I would never have
thought in a million years we would have found him only a block away
from school. Definitely a good ending, with the holidays," Logan said.
Young said police were pleased that it ended well.
"And that he's home safe, where he belongs," Young said.
