PAYSON, AZ (CBS5) - The man who wanted to adopt missing baby Gabriel Johnson will be laid to rest Tuesday. A preliminary autopsy report shows Jack Smith died of natural causes last week after a car crash.
Smith and his wife, Tammi, had hoped to adopt baby Gabriel without his father's consent, before the boy went missing in 2009.
Tammi Smith served jail time because of it.
Elizabeth Johnson, the boy's mother, was released from prison on Friday. Gabriel's whereabouts are still unknown.
Jack Smith was in a rollover accident last week outside of Payson, where he suffered minor injuries.
But the next morning, police said his wife called 911 to report her husband was having a seizure.
Police say they are continuing a suspicious death investigation because of the timing of Smith's death ... and statements made by his wife to paramedics.
Smith's funeral will be at 3 p.m. at the Payson First Assembly of God Church, 1100 W. Lakeshore Dr.
