An Orlando mother turned herself
into police Friday on charges of first degree murder. Police say
Sanchia Rea Xavier-Velez purposely drowned her newborn baby girl in a
toilet. A police report says Xavier-Velez then carried the baby to a
hospital in a backpackInvestigators say the mother waited hours
before she went to the hospital, she never performed CPR on the baby
and they believe she gave birth a healthy girl.

Sanchia Xavier-Velez, 28, was eight months pregnant when, she told authorities,
she gave birth to her daughter Jazmyne. She said she had the baby
inside the bathroom of her apartment on November 3."She said she
gave birth to a baby in the toilet, but she believed it was still-born
and then passed out for a few hours. When she woke up, she found it was
deceased," said Sgt. Barb Jones, Orlando Police Department.According
to court records, Xavier-Velez told detectives she didn't call 911 or
go to the hospital because her cell phone was turned off and she was
not able to drive. She waited several hours and took her 7-year-old
daughter to school before going to Florida Hospital. She told
authorities it was a wanted pregnancy and named the baby Jazmyne, but
she recently lost her job and was worried about money. She told
investigators she sat on the couch thinking about how she was going to
pay for everything.Orlando police did not charge Xavier-Velez until after the
medical examiner's report ruled the baby was born alive."Obviously what she
believes happened the evidence finds contrary," Jones said.Neighbors
say Xavier-Velez was very quiet and they had no idea she was pregnant.
Her 7-year-old seemed well cared for and was friendly."When you have a neighbor like that,
that just stays to themselves, you don't know what goes on," neighbor Lyn Kruse said.The
7-year-old is in DCF custody. The mother will go before a judge
Saturday morning. According to reports, the baby's father is a truck
driver and doesn't live with Xavier-Velez. He was out of town during
the birth of the baby.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A 28-year-old Florida woman charged with drowning her newborn daughter in a toilet has been granted bail. A judge set a $10,000 bond for Sanchia Rae Xavier-Velez during a brief hearing Thursday.


Xavier-Velez is charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child, which
is a first-degree felony. If convicted, she could face up to 30 years
in prison. Orlando police say Xavier-Velez gave birth to a 4-pound, 5-ounce girl in November.
She told a hospital worker that she delivered the baby in a toilet at
her apartment. She later told investigators that after the delivery,
she felt "immobile," collapsed and slept for several hours.
