SOUTH BAY, Fla. -- A Palm Beach County teen reportedly tried to smother her baby and throw the boy in a trash bin.
The sheriff's office reports that 15-year-old Lakeshia A. Crawford was
charged Monday with aggravated child abuse and released the same day.
Authorities said the 6-month-old boy was crying on New Year's night and
Crawford began shouting at him to stop. Witnesses said she tried to
smother the baby, claiming she was going to kill him. Crawford reportedly took the infant outside and tried to throw him in a trash bin, but her mother's boyfriend stopped her. Paramedics were called to treat the child. The Florida Department of Children and Families also were also investigating.

SOUTH BAY — A 15-year-old tried to smother her 6-month-old child, then tried to throw the baby in a dumpster before her mother's boyfriend stopped her, according to reports.

Lakeshia A. Crawford, of South Bay, was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated child abuse.

She's now being held without bail in the Palm Beach County Jail's Belle Glade unit.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, on New Year's night, as the child lay crying on a couch, the girl continued to shout for him to stop.

She tried to smother the infant by pressing him against her chest, at the same time saying she was going to kill him.

She then took the child outside in the cold weather, wearing only a diaper, and tried to throw him in a dumpster, but was stopped by Torderick Curry, 31, the boyfriend of Crawford's mother, Latine Hunter, 34.

National Weather Service records show the temperature that night was in the mid-40s.

Questioned later by deputies, the girl could give no good reason as to why she wanted to kill the baby, sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said today.

Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue workers were called to treat the child, but the report does not elaborate.

The Florida Department of Children and Families also is investigating the case, Barbera said.
