"Infant Jane Doe" - 9 months - Chicago IL
Bail was denied today for a 24-year-old Southwest Side
woman accused of battering a 9-month-old girl she had been
baby-sitting. The child suffered multiple skull fractures and bleeding
into the brain.
Abigail Cihak was charged Thursday with aggravated battery of a child in the child's West Morgan Park
neighborhood home in the 10800 block of South Talman Avenue. She was
denied bail when she appeared today before Cook County Criminal Court
Judge Jackie Portman.
The incident happened Jan. 26, sometime between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Chicago police said. The girl's mother came home and found the girl with head injuries
The child was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, but was later transferred to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.
At the time, authorities said none of the child's injuries was
regarded as life-threatening. But a doctor at Comer said the girl's
injuries were "atypical of an accidental" occurrence, said Andy
Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.
Conklin could not say how the child was battered. Because the charge
against Cihak is a Class X felony, he said, the woman faces a
6-to-30-year prison sentence, if convicted.
Cihak, of the is scheduled to appear in court again Feb. 18.
