Adelanto CA ---- An 18-month-old girl from Adelanto died
Wednesday after suffering a possible assault, and sheriff's homicide
detectives have arrested the mother's boyfriend as a suspect.

Sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 2:30 a.m. to an Adelanto
residence in the 11200 block of La Habra Avenue after the child, Jayanna
Eason, was found not breathing, according to sheriff's officials.

Jayanna was taken by ambulance to Victor Valley Community
Hospital in Victorville where she was pronounced dead. Homicide
detectives conducted an investigation after injuries consistent with
assault were seen on the child.

The boyfriend of the child's mother, David Jackson, 27, of Apple
Valley, was arrested on suspicion of assault on a child under 8 years
old causing death, sheriff's officials said. Jackson was booked at
Central Detention Center in San Bernardino and is being held on $500,000
bail.

Melee forces judge to clear court in murder sentencing

VICTORVILLE • An Apple Valley man convicted of murdering his girlfriend’s 16-month-old daughter was sentenced to 25 years to life Thursday after a judge cleared the courtroom following a melee among family members.
David Anthony Jackson, 28, appeared at Victorville Superior Court wearing a green jumpsuit, signifying protective custody because he is a child abuser. A jury found Jackson guilty in September of second-degree murder of Jayanna Eason and assault on a child resulting in death.
Jackson listened to Eason’s family members make victim impact statements, looking straight into their faces.
After the third impact statement, however, a female member of Jackson’s family shouted toward the victim’s family, and the two sides began screaming and pushing each other. A male in the audience yelled at Jackson before the defendant was escorted out of the room. Sheriff’s deputies immediately cleared more than 25 people out of the courtroom, but the family members kept shouting at each other in the hallway and the parking lot.
The courtroom was provided with extra security because of growing animosity between the two families during the trial in August.
Jackson was brought back for sentencing as Judge Jules Fleuret closed the courtroom to the public.
Jackson, who attempted to address Eason’s family before the melee, said in the near-empty room he didn’t kill Eason and was wrongly accused. Jackson told Fleuret he was the only one who cared for Eason and was like a father figure to her.
“Jayanna was mine. She was mine,” Jackson said. “... She called me daddy. Nobody else.”
He said he understands the victim’s family’s loss because he’s hurt, too. His life is destroyed, Jackson said. Jackson served in the Army and National Guard and has three children — 3, 4 and 5 years old — with a fourth on the way, according to his probation officer’s report.
He looked at prosecutor Steve Sinfield and called him “Satan.”
“He’s very arrogant, extremely arrogant,” Sinfield said. “I think that came across to the jurors when he testified and that came across to the judge today, I think. He got what he deserved. He deserved 25 to life. If I could have given him more, I would have given him more, but I couldn’t.”
