The trial of a man accused of killing his
girlfriend's 2-year-old son gets under way Monday in Sedgwick County
District Court. Twenty-eight-year-old
DeWhite Cameron is charged with first- degree murder done in the
commission of child abuse in the death of Damion Thomas. Cameron also
faces two counts of aggravated battery against Damion and his twin
brother. Damion's mother, Shaneekwa Saunders, has
pleaded guilty to aggravated child endangerment and been placed on
probation. She admitted leaving her children with Cameron while she

defense attorney, Lee McMaster, has said previously that part of
Cameron's defense "may well be that others, or another, were involved in the death."

Wichita man sentenced in murder of infant
8:33 a.m. CDT, July 8, 2010
A man found guilty of first degree murder and aggravated battery is sentenced to more than 34 years in prison.
DeWhite Cameron was convicted in May of beating twin boys, one of them fatally.
Emergency crews were called to their home on North Erie in Wichita in 2008 and found the twin two-year-old boys. Damion Thomas was unconscious and not breathing and died a short time later.
The autopsy showed he died of blunt force trauma to his head and torso. His twin brother, Trayvion, was hospitalized.
Cameron was also charged with child abuse on another sibling.
Cameron's attorney asked the judge for a new trial and motion judgement for acquittal based on what he called a lack of evidence.
The judge denied both.
Cameron's attorney also asked for the court the show Cameron mercy and not seek revenge by allowing the sentence to concurrently.
The judge called Cameron's actions "terrible" and stated that Cameron "did not show Damion Thomas or his brother mercy."
The State says they were not seeking revenge but justice.
Cameron was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole for first degree murder plus 14.3 years in prison for aggravated assault.
Cameron did not speak after his sentencing. Family memebers did not comment either.
Cameron does have the right to appeal.
