A baby was transferred to a
hospital in Denver on Friday with life-threatening brain injuries, while
Colorado Springs police are investigating this as a possible child
abuse case.
The two-month-old was initially
being treated at Memorial Hospital with what medical experts called
multiple subdural hematomas. They reported the baby's condition to the
Colorado Springs Police Department. The case is now being investigated
by the Crimes Against Children Unit.No cause for the baby's
injuries has been determined, however police advise that these
investigations typically get underway if the trauma cannot be attributed
to something like a car accident. No arrests have been made, but crime
scene investigators were scouring an apartment in the 4100 block of West
Meadow Drive in Colorado Springs. Police detailed that they believe
that's where the baby was just before being taken to the hospital
earlier on Friday.
Neighbors in that apartment
complex were surprised to hear about the potential case of child abuse.
"This is supposed to be a family area," said Shelby Hartford, who lives
near the apartment being investigated. "It's right next to Ft. Carson,
and Ft. Carson is very intertwined with family."
Hospital officials say the baby
was vomiting when it was taken into the hospital.
As of Friday, the baby was at
Denver's Children's Hospital to undergo surgery for life-threatening
brain swelling and bleeding.
