Adel GA ---- A 13-year-old boy is dead, the victim of a single gunshot wound to the
face. His 14-year-old brother has been identified as the shooter,
according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. However, the
investigation continues, Cook County Sheriff Johnny Daughtry said
Thursday.

At about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office
was dispatched to the 200 block of Hemp Springs Circle in reference to
“a subject with a gunshot wound to the face,” according to a Cook County
incident report.

The reporting officer wrote in the report, “Before arriving on the
scene, dispatch advised me that the subject who did the shooting was
still on the scene and was contemplating killing himself.”

Two officers arrived at the scene. One went to the front door of the residence, and the other went to the back door.

“As I got out of my patrol unit, a white male came out on the front
porch,” the officer reported, “and when I got closer to the subject, I
noticed he had blood all around his mouth. I asked him where the other
individual was and he said on the ground. He further stated, ‘I’m sorry.
I did it.’”

One officer entered the residence, finding the 13-year-old victim. The
other dealt with the brother until medical personnel arrived.

When asked, Daughtry said that the gun used was a 9mm handgun.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents and Cook County Coroner Ron
Lipsey also responded to the scene. Lipsey said that he pronounced the
teen dead at 1:42 p.m. His body was sent to the Georgia State Crime Lab
for autopsy.

The case remains under investigation, Daughtry said. The district
attorney’s office has filed charges against the brother, he added.

The brothers, who are adopted, were home alone when the incident occurred, Daughtry said.

Cook Co. teen shot and killed by brother

Updated:Aug 01, 2010

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) –A Cook County teenager was shot and killed by his own brother.

The boys apparently were playing with a gun while their father was not home, but investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what happened.

A 13-year old boy was shot and killed by his 14-year old brother inside their home on Hemp Spring Circle Wednesday afternoon.

"It's certainly a tragedy for that family at the very best there's nothing good about this," said Cook County Sheriff John Daughtrey. "It's something I can't even imagine."

Authorities refused to give us the names of the teens.

"It's our understanding that they removed the guns from the safe," said Daughtrey. "The father was gone to a doctor's appointment."

The nine millimeter gun was loaded when the boys pulled it out of the safe.

The boy called his father and told him his brother had been shot but he wasn't sure if he was dead or not. His dad told him to call 9-1-1. A neighbor also rushed to the mobile home.

The boy was shot in the face and his brother tried giving him CPR to bring him back to life.

When authorities got there they found the teen lying on floor next to the love seat in the living room.

This should serve as warning to people who have both guns and children in their home.

"I highly suggest to someone that has firearms in the house to have gunlocks on them if they have children," said Ed Mullinax of Valdosta Pawn.

The GBI told us late Thursday afternoon the teen has been charged with misdemeanor involuntary manslaughter.

The Sheriff tells us the father has raised the boys on his own since their mother died several years ago.
