Albuquerque police now say the deaths of a young mother and her 1-year-old child are a homicide case.Firefighters found the bodies Sunday inside a burned home on Rim Road as they battled the fire.
They have been identified as Yuriko Santana-Hernandez, 21, and her year-old son, Julian Montoya-Santana.Tuesday, police took over the case."We
investigate child abuse resulting in death, but very seldom do we see a
case where a 1-year-old was deliberately murdered," said Albuquerque
Police Department Chief Ray Schultz.Police said they are not releasing details of the crime investigation to make sure they build a strong case.Schultz said that police have recovered a car stolen from the scene and are processing the vehicle for clues.The Office
of the Medical Investigator said Wednesday that Yuriko
Santana-Hernandez was stabbed several times.OMI officials said the child had an incision wound to the neck from a knife or sharp object.Fire investigators said Wednesday they believe the fire was intentionally set.Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call Crimestoppers at 843-STOP.

Man accused of murder faces a judge

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - A man charged with murdering a woman and her child last year was arraigned in district court Monday morning.

Jesus Arredondo Soto pleaded not guilty.

Judge Bob Schwartz continued Soto's bond at $1 million cash only.

Soto is accused of killing Yuriko Santana-Hernandez and her one year-old son in their south valley trailer last august, then set it one fire.

He was caught in Mexico in April.

Police believe the motive behind the murders was a robbery gone bad.

DNA to be collected from accused killer

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) - Prosecutors are moving forward with their case against the man they say stabbed a young Albuquerque mother, slashed her baby's throat and set their bodies on fire.

On Wednesday, a Bernalillo County District Court judge approved the state collecting evidence from Jesus Arredondo Soto.

That evidence is a DNA sample and palm prints, which the prosecution believe could link Soto to the murders.

They call Wednesday's hearing the next critical step forward in the case.

"Because of the allegations, the defendant, if he were to be found guilty could be facing at least two life sentences. Because of these charges so it is critical that our office move forward and carry the case forward as best we can," said Kayla Anderson with the Bernalillo County District Attorney's office.

Soto is jailed on a $1 million cash-only bond.
