A local man accused of pushing his girlfriend's toddler to the floor three days ago, causing him to hit his head, was arrested Monday when the 3-year-old was found dead in the couple's apartment.
Corey C. Fitzgerald, 29, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, said Deputy Chief Michael Mohel of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office. Fitzgerald also has been charged with aggravated assault on the boy's mother in a separate incident, Mohel said. He could face additional charges pending the results of an autopsy on the child and further tests to determine the cause of death, Mohel said.Investigators said the child's mother, Tara Young, called police after Fitzgerald discovered the child unresponsive in a bed in their partment on Edgewood Drive about 6:45 a.m. The boy, Teyshawn Young, was taken to Community Medical Center, here, and pronounced dead at 6:55 a.m.A criminal complaint states that Fitzgerald became angry at Teyshawn on Saturday and pushed him from behind so that he fell off a bed and struck his head on the hardwood floor in the hallway. Two days later, the child died. Whether any medical treatment was sought for the fall is under investigation, authorities said. Investigators were told the child was autistic, but that could not be confirmed Monday.Young was at work at time of the alleged incident and has not been charged, Mohel said.The assault charges stem from Fitzgerald allegedly choking Tara Young until she lost consciousness Thursday as well as hitting her with a set of keys, cutting her left lip, according to the complaints.Fitzgerald was being held in the Ocean County Jail, here, Monday in lieu of $100,000 bail. Authorities said he has also been the subject of an investigation by the state's Department of Youth and Family Services. DYFS could not confirm that on Monday.A Corey Fitzgerald with the same birth date was sentenced in Jersey City in 2005 to two years' probation on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to records.

The Toms River man taken into custody Monday during an investigation into the death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son was charged Tuesday with aggravated manslaughter of the toddler.
Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels informed the man, Corey C. Fitzgerald, 29, of the new charge as he made his first court appearance Tuesday afternoon.Daniels told an ostensibly unemotional Fitzgerald that his bail on the aggravated manslaughter charge was set at $500,000.When Fitzgerald was arrested Monday, he was charged with endangerment of the child, Teyshawn Young, as well as aggravated and simple assault on the boy's mother, Tara Young, in a separate incident. Bail set on those charges totaled $125,000.The mother, surrounded by friends and family, sat in court Tuesday, sobbing during the brief court appearance. She declined comment afterward.Deputy Chief Michael Mohel of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said later that the complaint charging Fitzgerald with aggravated manslaughter of the boy was signed after an autopsy performed Monday night by Dr. Hydow Park, Atlantic County's medical examiner. The autopsy revealed that the child's death was a homicide, caused by complications of blunt abdominal injuries that perforated his intestines, Mohel said.Authorities said that the boy's mother summoned help for the boy at 6:47 a.m. Monday, after Fitzgerald found him unresponsive in their apartment on Edgewood Drive. The child was pronounced dead upon arrival at Community Medical Center, here, at 6:55 a.m. Monday.Complaints were later signed against Fitzgerald, alleging that while he was minding the boy on Saturday, he pushed the child, causing the toddler to fall from a bed and strike his head on a hardwood floor in the hallway of the apartment.The complaints also allege that Fitzgerald choked the boy's mother into unconsciousness on Thursday, and struck her on the hip with a set of keys, causing lacerations.Court records indicate that Fitzgerald, formerly of Bayonne, served 195 days in the Hudson County Jail and was placed on probation for two years in 2005 after pleading guilty to aggravated assault in a plea bargain in which charges of kidnapping, terrorist threats, criminal restraint and criminal mischief were dismissed.Toms River Detective Glenn Lucas and county prosecutor's Detective Casey Long are investigating the child's death. An investigation is underway in the death of a 3-year-old, and why child services (DYFS) in New Jersey allowed the child to remain in the home even after getting a report that the child was being abused. Teyshawn Young died five days after a DYFS worker visited his home in Toms River. Video, showing 3-year-old Teyshawn Young just a few months before his death was taken by Donald Giberson and he wants his story told.
He says little Teyshawn was like a nephew to him, and his girlfriend andhe would take the 3-year old for weekends, even longer sometimes. In July when they saw cuts and marks on Teyshawn's face, and they got concerned. Giberson says they didn't call DYFS, but someone did. "If they would have looked into it.... Maybe this could have been prevented," he said. DYFS confirms, the agency did make a home visit to check on Teyshawn on September 15. Despite the marks on his face, the case worker decided the allegations of abuse were unfounded. Five days later Teyshawn was found dead in his bed. Corey Fitzgerald, who was living with Teyshawn and his mother has been charged with aggravated manslaughter. The child died from blunt force to the stomach and injuries to his face. His mother, Tara, now says Fitzgerald was hitting her too, but she never thought he would hit her little boy. But Giberson says DYFS should've known and that could've made the difference in the world. "If they had looked into it further like they were supposed to do, maybe his death could've been prevented," he said.

NJ man faces prison for death of autistic child

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - October 8, 2011 (WPVI) -- A New Jersey man who caused the death of his ex-girlfriend's autistic son last year has been sentenced to 12 years in state prison.

Corey C. Fitzgerald must serve 85 percent of his term before becoming eligible for parole under the sentence imposed Friday. He also received a concurrent four-year term for an unrelated aggravated assault of his ex-girlfriend in June 2010.
Fitzgerald pleaded guilty in September to aggravated manslaughter in the death of 3-year-old Teyshawn Young. Fitzgerald was babysitting Teyshawn when he pushed him, causing the child to strike his head.
Fitzgerald then hid the child's injuries from his mother over the next few days. The boy later died at a hospital, and an autopsy found he died of a perforated bowel caused by blunt abdominal trauma.
