Woman, 3 Kids Found Dead In Violent Fla. Scene

Neighbors Say Area Plagued By Burglaries
8:51 pm EST November 20, 2010

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A woman and her three young children were found killed at a violent crime scene in a north Florida home on Saturday, and homicide detectives were out looking for whoever might have had a reason to harm them, police said.

Family and neighbors said the woman was a single, stay-at-home mother raising twin 6-year-old girls and a 3-year-old son.

Police spokesman David McCranie wouldn't elaborate on the signs of violence police found at the home, but investigators believe the four were slain by someone else. The case is being investigated as a homicide.

"We are trying to find out if anyone would want to harm the family," he said.

The man who lives two doors down said the neighborhood had burglary problems in recent years, though the crimes had waned with increased police patrols. McCranie said he wasn't aware of a lot of problems in the neighborhood and that police hadn't been called to the one-story home before.

It sits in a subdivision built about five years ago that's surrounded by dense woods a few miles from the campuses of Florida State University and Florida A&M University. McCranie said a lot of families live in the neighborhood.

"This is a very shocking and unusual case for us," he said.

McCranie wouldn't say how the four died or release their names. Their bodies were found after police received a suspicious call at 10:15 a.m.

Phone numbers listed for the home were not in service. A man who owns the property declined comment.

On Saturday afternoon, a crowd gathered outside the house while crime scene investigators came in and out. Several relatives had come but mostly wouldn't talk to reporters.

Dennis Williams, 35, of Albany, Ga., identified himself as the half-brother of the slain woman, who he said was 28. He said the two weren't close, but he knew the woman's focus was on her children.

Cedrica Smith lives across the street and said her young children often played with the children found dead. Smith said the twin girls and the boy had different fathers, neither of which had been married to the woman.

The deaths were a surprise to 40-year-old Antawn Ellison, who lives two doors down from the slain family. He said the neighborhood has been mostly free of crime since police stepped up patrols because of a rash of burglaries about two years ago.

"This is a big shock to me," he said.

However, a woman who came to the scene from her home in an adjacent neighborhood said crime is still a problem where she lives.

"There are a lot of home invasions out here," said Sandra Smith.

Mom, 3 Kids Murder Victims in Florida

Nov 21, 2010

Tallahassee, FLA: The story is becoming all too familiar in the US. Domestic violence ending in the murder of innocent children. Add Florida to the recent list of tragedies. Last night it was reported that an adult and three children were murdered in the suburban home. This morning more evidence has been released.

Autopsies were being performed Sunday on the bodies of a young, single, stay-at-home mother, her children 6 year-old-twin girls and a 3 year-old-son. The names of the family have not yet been released to the public. The home of the family is in a quiet suburban area just miles from the state capital. A new subdivision that has not yet seen the likes of such destructive behavior until now.

Tallahassee police spokesman David McCranie calls the scene on of extreme violence. He reported to the press that autopsies are being done this morning and authorities are working diligently to find out who would have wanted to harm the family. There had been an increase in police surveillance in the new sub-division due to an increase in burglaries in the area.

The bodies were found after police received a suspicious call at 10:15 am, Saturday. Dennis Williams, identified as the half-brother of the slain woman said the mother was 28. He stated that the two were not close, but valued her focus on the children. Neighbor Cedrica Smith offered that her children played with the twins. She also stated that the boy had a different father than the girls.

Police: Deaths of Fla. mom, 3 kids are homicides

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The deaths of a young mother and her three small children whose bodies were found in their home are homicides, police said Sunday.Autopsies were completed Sunday and authorities are looking for information on anyone who may have wanted to harm the family, said Tallahassee police spokesman David McCranie.

Police refused to release the autopsy results or how the victims died because making those details public might hurt the investigation, Tallahassee Police Chief Dennis Jones said.

Police said the victims are 27-year-old Brandi Peters, her 6-year-old twin daughters, Tamiyah and Taniyah Peters, and 3-year-old son, Jovante Segura.

A mother and her three young children were found dead in their North Florida home. David McCranie from the police department wouldn't say how the four died or release their names. Their bodies were found after police received an anonymous phone call mid-morning on Saturday.

"There are a lot of home invasions out here," Sandra Smith, who lives nearby, told The Associated Press. Hopefully, police will investigate Sandra Smith to make sure she actually has a home nearby and was not the suspect.

Police in Tallahassee, Fla., are desperately trying to unravel the horrible mystery of who murdered a mother and her three young children in their home.
Autopsies were performed Sunday on the woman, her 6-year-old twin daughters and her 3-year-old son, but Tallahassee officials declined to release details on the cause of death of the mother and her three children, beyond saying that it was determined they were victims of homicide.Police identified the victims as Brandi Peters, 27 and her children, Tamiyah Peters, 6; Taniyah Peters, 6; and Jovante Segura, 3.The only other details police did release today were that there was no sign of forced entry to the house, and that broken glass seen near the door to the well-kept home was a result of police trying to gain access to the house."I want to assure the public that we are following up on active leads in this case," Tallahassee Police Department Chief Dennis Jones said. "We cannot release details, as it would adversely affect our ability to solve this crime."The three were found Saturday morning after a neighbor in the recently built quiet subdivision near Florida State University and Florida A&M University called the police."We had a neighbor call us who was concerned, so we responded to try to look around the house and so forth, and that's when we discovered the bodies," Tallahassee Police Department spokesman Officer David McCranie said."There are obvious signs of violence" in the house, he added.McCrainie said there had been a number of break-ins in the neighborhood, but police had recently increased their presence there."This is a very shocking and unusual case for us," he said. But a woman who lives nearby told The Associated Press that violent crime is still a problem in the area."There are a lot of home invasions out here," Sandra Smith told the AP.
Police searched the house on Saturday, looking for clues to what happened."As we go into the scene, it's very expansive," McCranie said. "A lot of detail involved to make sure we don't miss anything or make a mistake, so things are a little slow right now, but progress is being made."Peters and her children lived alone in the house, so police are talking to their relatives and friends to learn what they can and find out if there was anyone who might have wanted to hurt them.Neighbors who gathered Saturday were in shock, watching police going in and out of the house with bags of evidence, as the children's bicycles lay in the open garage."It was just police. The scene was just very alarming," Darius Mount, a neighbor, told ABC affiliate WTXL-TV in Tallahassee."They were just kids," Mount said. "It's just sad sight to see. It's sad knowing these kids didn't make it."Police are asking anyone with any information about the family to call the Tallahassee Police Department at 850-891-4200.

Brandi Peters, 3 Small Children Brutally Murdered

Tallahassee, Florida

Brandi Peters, 27, her 3-year old son, Jovante Segura and her twin daughters Tamiyah and Taniyah Peters, 6, were found viciously murdered in their home over the weekend.

Autopsies were performed yesterday, November 21,2010 but the results are not being released at this time.

Investigators are saying there was no sign of forced entry into Brandi Peters home.

Tallahassee police, along with Georgia forensic investigators spent Monday, November 22, 2010 gathering DNA, fingerprints and other evidence from Brandi Peter’s home. Ms. Peters, along with her three young children were slain over the weekend.

Some neighbors are saying they are not surprised, as the neighborhood has been plagued by crime for a few years. Other neighbors say there was a brief spurt of crime in the tidy, middle class neighborhood, but the area had calmed down.

Most feel that Brandi Peters let the killer(s) into her home since there were no signs of forced entry.
Authorities assured neighbors that the broken glass scattered about was the result of the police having to break into the home.

The bodies of Brandi Peters, Tamiyah and Taniyah Peters and Jovante Segura were found after authorities responded to a ’suspicious’ call Saturday morning.

Some officers claim the crime scene is the most gruesome they’ve ever witnessed.

According to Tallahassee police spokesman David McCranie :
Burglaries had been a problem in the neighborhood of the slayings, though the crimes had waned with increased police patrols. Authorities hadn’t been called to the home before Saturday, when the bodies were found.
Currently there’s no known motive or suspect(s). What is known is that Brandi Peters received a final order for child support from Henry Segura Jr., in August, 2010 for their son Jovante—–and last week she obtained a final order for $307.00 a month child support from Antonio L. Anthony, the father of the twin girls, Tamiyah and Taniyah. He was also ordered to pay retroactive support of $22,925 to Ms. Peters. Antonio L. Anthony has a lengthy criminal record.

While money is often a motive for murder, it’s important to note that neither Henry Segura Jr. or Antonio L. Anthony have been named as persons of interest or suspects in this tragic and senseless case.

We can only hope that an arrest is made soon. In my opinion, anyone capable of slaughtering children needs to be caged, then euthanized ASAP.
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact the Tallahassee Police Department at (850) 891-4200 or Crime Stoppers at (850) 574-TIPS (8477). Remember, Crime Stoppers does not want your name, just your information. You could be eligible for a cash reward.
What do you think happened? Stranger violence or up close and personal? What kind of creature sadistically kills little children and their mother?

By all accounts, Brandi Peters was a good mother and decent human being. Did her kindness towards other lead to this barbaric ending of her life, and that of her children?

We offer our prayers and sympathy to all involved in this tragedy, including the officers trying to bring justice for this family.

A woman found dead in her home along with her three young children had been in court four days earlier seeking child support from her slain 6-year-old twins' father, who has a lengthy criminal record, court records show.A judge last Tuesday signed a final order requiring Antonio L. Anthony to pay $307 per month plus retroactive child support of $22,925 to 27-year-old Brandi Peters. Peters was found dead Saturday along with twins Tamiyah and Taniyah Peters and her 3-year-old son, Joyante Segura, at their Tallahassee home just a few miles from the Florida Capitol. No one has been charged and police say all four deaths are considered homicides. Police said Monday that they have spoken to the father of the twins and the boy's father, Henry Segura Jr.Peters also had obtained a final order in August for $744.47 per month and $20,100 in retroactive child support from Segura Jr.
Anthony, 44, who has a handgun tattooed on his left arm, has served three prison terms in the past 20 years, according Florida Department of Corrections records. He most recently was released in May 2009 after serving four years on two counts of cocaine possession and grand theft of a motor vehicle. His prior offenses were for aggravated assault with a weapon and armed burglary.Anthony has no local telephone listing and could not be reached for comment.Authorities were unable to find him in October when they tried to serve him with a notice to appear in court for the child support case. A return of service receipt said he did not live at either Tallahassee address listed for him and possibly had moved to Fort Lauderdale.Peters and Anthony last week each signed a warning notice saying they are required by Florida law to inform the court of any address change within seven days.Segura also has no telephone listing. A woman who answered the phone at the home of Segura's father said she didn't know how he could be reached. The court file includes a letter Segura wrote in July asking for a paternity test based on a voicemail Peters had left for him."In the message she stated that I was stupid for signing a birth certificate for a child that was not even mine," Segura wrote. The August administrative order, though, states the child's paternity was "legally established by affidavit or voluntary acknowledgment."Child welfare officials received a call in November 2005 alleging unsafe conditions at Peters' home, but the case was closed the following month with no finding of an immediate threat to the family, said Department of Children and Families spokesman Joe Follick.Peters also had a criminal record. She was placed on probation for a year after pleading no contest to simple battery in exchange for a reduction from aggravated battery.Last year, Peters was placed on community supervision for two years for aggravated assault with a weapon and grand theft.

$10,000 UNSOLVED MURDERS REWARD

Tallahassee authorities authorized a $10,000 reward for information that could help them solve the slayings of Brandi Peters and her three children on November 21, 2010.
She had been in court four days earlier seeking child support from Antonio L. Anthony, the father, of the slain 6-year-old twins.
Court records show Anthony, who has a lengthy criminal record, was ordered to sign a final order requiring him to pay $307 per month, plus retroactive child support of $22, 925.
Anthony, 44, who has a handgun tattooed on his left arm, has served three prison terms in the past 20 years for cocaine possession, grand theft of a motor vehicle, aggravated assault with a weapon and armed burglary, says the Florida Department of Corrections.
Ms. Peters who also has a criminal record was placed on probation for a year after pleading not contest to simple battery in exchange for a reduction from aggravated battery.
The mother-of-three was placed on community supervision last year for aggravated assault with a weapon and grand theft.
Tallahassee Police Chief Dennis Jones said police refused to release the autopsy results or how the victims died because making those details public might hurt the investigation.
Police said that they have spoken to the twins’ father, as well as Joyante’s father, Henry Segura Jr., who was ordered in August to pay $744 per month and roughly $20,000 in retroactive child support.
Deputy police chief Cheryl Stewart said that authorities hope the reward money might bring someone forward with helpful information about the killings of 27-year-old Brandi Peters; her 6-year-old twin daughters, Tamiyah and Taniyah Peters; and 3-year-old son, Jovante Segura.
The bodies of Peters and her children were found Nov. 20.
“In my 23 years of law enforcement, I have never had to deal with a more disturbing and emotional crime,” Stewart said.
Stewart said the reward money comes from seized assets and forfeiture money in a law enforcement trust fund, but she did not answer questions about the status of the investigation.
Police have not released the autopsy results, although they have said the deaths were homicides. They also said there was no sign anyone broke into the home rented by Peters. The single-story home is in a subdivision built about five years ago, and not far from the state Capitol and the campuses of Florida State University and Florida A&M University.
Big Bend Crime Stoppers had established a Peters’ family account at a local bank to raise additional reward money.

[UPDATE] Segura Headed Home to Face Charges in Quadruple Murder
Man accused in quadruple murder is on his way back to Tallahassee to face charges, hundreds of court documents released
Posted: 12:59 PM Sep 29, 2011

UPDATED 9.29.2011 by Julie Montanaro

The sheriff of Le Sueur County, Minnesota says Henry Segura, Jr. was picked up by federal marshals this morning.

Sheriff Thomas Doherty says Segura was released to marshals this morning at about 10:30 central time.

Segura had already waived extradition to Florida.

Segura is accused in the murders of his former girlfriend, Brandi Peters, their son, and her two daughters.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATED 9.29.2011 by Julie Montanaro

More than 350 pages of court documents in the case were released Wednesday afternoon.

They indicate Brandi Peters told her mother and her sister about an argument she and Segura had over child support on November 19, 2010. That's just one day before the bodies of Peters and her three children were found in their Saddle Creek home.

The documents include synopses of dozens of law enforcement interviews, including an initial interview with Henry Segura on November 30, 2010.

Segura denied having anything to do with the murders. Segura told police that he had received a text message from Peters the Tuesday before the murders asking him if he was going to come over and visit their son, JaVante. Segura told police he hadn't seen them in months.

Segura told police he went to Peters's home the next day to visit and said the afternoon visit was cordial.

Segura says Peters sent him a text message on Friday too, but claims he did not respond.

Segura says he was home working on his Monte Carlo that day and was home all night too.

Segura told officers he found out about the murders Saturday afternoon when he called to make an appointment with his sons' hairdresser.
------------------------------------------------------------
September 29, 2011 by Julie Montanaro

Court documents released Wednesday show Henry Segura showed up at an ex-girlfriend's home in Savannah, Georgia just days before the murders, asking for a gun.

The woman told police Segura was angry, that his face was "all balled up" and that something "was not right" with him. She said Segura would not say what was bothering him and she didn't push to find out. The woman told police when she refused to give Segura her gun, Segura said he needed a "street gun."

The woman told police she called in a tip to Crime Stoppers about it soon after the murders.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
September 29, 2011 by Julie Montanaro

Court records released Wednesday show police investigated several tips that claimed Brandi Peters was the target of a hitman.

Police say some information they obtained indicated that Brandi Peters was going to marry an inmate at Tallahassee's FCI so he could gain his U.S. citizenship in exchange for a new Mercedes and $25,000. Tipsters told police that Peters backed out of the marriage and the inmate ordered her to be killed.

When police interviewed the man at FCI, he denied it and said he wasn't even aware Peters had changed her mind. He said Peters was supposed to go to Georgia on Thanksgiving to pick up her Mercedes.

Police also interviewed Peters' former boyfriend, Kenny Greene, who was also an inmate at FCI at the time. Documents show Greene told police he read about the murders in the newspaper. He told police he didn't know who had killed Peters. Greene told police he was JaVante's father, but no one on the street knew it. Greene told police he did owe people money, but no one would go so far as to kill a family over it.

Police also investigated tips that Peters was killed by two men for failing to pay for a large quantity of cocaine, but they found no evidence linking either of them to the murders. One of the men said he had talked about the murders on the street to make himself look tough, but was not involved and had never even met Brandi Peters.

Tallahassee, FL -- September 7, 2011 6:15 by Lanetra Bennett

A multiple murder indictment is unsealed now that a Tallahassee man has been arrested for killing his own son, the child's sisters, and their mother.

The court documents finally reveal how Brandi Peters and her children were murdered back in November 2010.

Indictment documents show that 27-year-old Brandi Peters and her six-year-old daughter Tamiyah were shot to death, and that Tamiyah's twin, Taniyah, and their three year old brother Javante Segura were drowned.

Javante's father, Henry Segura, was indicted for their murders last Thursday.

Tallahassee resident Leroy Tyler says, "Killing them was beyond my belief. I can't believe it. It's something that I can't even grasp. I can't even imagine that. It's a terrible thing."

Peters and the children were found dead inside their home at 908 Saddle Creek Run on November 20, 2010.

Authorities found Segura in a small town in Minnesota and arrested him for the crime last Friday morning.

Tallahassee resident Keyva Vincent says, "That's really sad because you wouldn't expect a father to harm his own children. That's really, really heart-wrenching to hear. That was really sad and that really hit the community really, really hard."

Prosecutors have not confirmed a motive.

However, court records show that Segura was ordered to take a paternity test on July 22, 2010.

On September 11, 2010, less than two months before the murders, he was ordered to pay $744 a month, plus $74 in back pay.

His total back pay in child support was more than $20,000 at that time.

On September 14, 2010, an order was signed to take $818 from his paycheck every month.

On August 16, 2011, an order to stop support was signed because the mother and child were dead.

Tallahassee resident Schuwanna McGill says, "For the acts that he committed, I would say the death penalty."

Henry Segura is still in Minnesota waiting to be extradited to Tallahassee.

------------------------------------------------

September 7, 2011 2:45pm -

Leon Co. Commissioner Bill Proctor releases a statement about the case:

The details of this murder expose a low moment in human history. It was a heartless act beyond horrific.

Obviously, the trial will be a painful experience exposing the very worse of the human personality and character when it is disconnected from the stabilizing force of God Almighty.

My whole heart and all of our prayers are extended to the victims and their families that they will endure the public process that justice requires.

Whoever did this degenerative, inhumane and hideous deed deserves the full weight of punishment available under the law.

Prosecutors are not commenting on a motive for the murders of Brandi Peters and her three children and will not say if a recent child support order was a factor.

Court records indicate that two months before the murders, Henry Segura, Jr was ordered to pay more than 800 dollars a month in child support for his 3 year old son JaVante.

Segura requested a paternity test in July 2010 and after that confirmed he was JaVante's father the Department of Revenue ordered Segura to pay both current child support and more than $20,000 in back child support.

An indictment filed in the deaths of Brandi Peters and her three children has now been unsealed.

The four count murder indictment against Henry Segura Jr. reveals that Peters and her daughter Tamiyah were shot to death and daughter Taniyah and son JaVante were drowned.

JaVante is Segura's son.

Segura was captured by U.S. Marshals Friday near Cleveland, Minnesota. He has not yet been brought back to Tallahassee to face charges.

UPDATE 9.2.2011 7pm by Julie Montanaro

Segura was living in a basement apartment of a house on Lake Jefferson near the town of Cleveland, Minnesota.

Video sent by our CBS affiliate shows Segura's blue truck parked outside with its Florida license plate.

There are pictures of his son on the dashboard of the truck.

----------------------------------------------------
[UPDATE] by Lanetra Bennett -- September 2, 2011 6:30pm

A Tallahassee man was arrested today and accused of killing his own son, as well as the little boy's mother and twin sisters.

The quadruple murder last November stunned Saddle Creek and remained unsolved ... until now.

"Excited! But, then when they flashed the picture of who did it, I was shocked!"

The picture was of 33-year-old Henry Segura.

Rickia Mathis says it's not just shocking that he's arrested for killing a woman and her three kids, but, that one of the kids was Segura's own son.

Mathis says, "This is unthinkable, unspeakable act to do something like this to innocent children, let alone their mother."

Segura's picture was also shocking to Mathis because she lives on the same street where the quadruple murder happened November 20, 2010; and she says Segura attended her church, where the congregation rallied around him.

Mathis says, "It's gut-wrenching to know you hugged--yeah, I'm going to call it what it is--you hugged a murderer. You prayed for a murderer."

27-year-old Brandi Peters, her twin daughters Tamiyah and Taniyah Peters, and her three-year-old son Javante--also Segura's son--were found dead in their home at 908 Saddle Creek Run in Tallahassee.

Segura was arrested early Friday (Sept. 2) morning in the small town of Cleveland, Minnesota nine months later.

Community activist Rev. Dr. Joseph Wright says, Chief Jones made some promises to us. But, because of the span of time, there was a lot of innuendos and questioning the integrity of the department. But, we never gave up. We thank God that this has now come to pass."

Segura's arrest comes on the day the twin girls would've turned seven.

"I'm glad it's over with. They can finally rest in peace. This neighborhood can have some peace and closure." Says, Mathis.

Tallahassee Police Chief Dennis Jones says his department dedicated more than 7,400 hours in investigative resources, and says they will continue to use all resources necessary to support this investigation through trial and prosecution.

Police still have not released the details of how the four were killed, saying the investigation is still ongoing.

Segura is in Minnesota awaiting extradition to Tallahassee.

Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor says, "There's no question that this is one of the most heinous acts ever committed in the history of Leon County. This situation was begging out for justice, begging for closure. There are people all over the community who are very excited and who are quite happy that the suspect has been apprehended.

Henry Segura walked into a Leon County courtroom to begin the first stages of his defense, officially choosing defense attorney, Chuck Hobbs as lead council on his case.

n November of 2010, Tallahassee police officers found the bodies of 27-year-old Brandi Peters, her three-year-old son, and twin six-year-old girls.

Peters and one of her daughters had been shot, the other two children, including Segura's own son, had been drowned.

Eleven months later, police arrested Segura in Minnesota when a grand jury handed down a murder indictment. Defense attorney Hobbs says he plans to fight that indictment.

He says,"Without getting too specific, I do know this, we filed a motion to have the grand jury proceedings transcribed, because with what we have so far, we're having a difficult time to determine why probable cause existed to indict him in the first place."

Grand jury proceedings are usually kept secret in Florida, and prosecutor Jack Campbell says he plans to fight to keep it that way. Until then, the next time Segura could face a judge will be February 16th.

He is charged with four counts of 1st degree murder and has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

[UPDATE] November 29, 2011 -
