Unidentified Deceased Infant - Found in wooded area - North Fort Myers FL
No one knows how long a wooded area thick with brush in North Fort
Myers had been the grave of an infant whose body was discovered Friday.Lee
County sheriff’s detectives are trying to determine what caused the
death and how the baby ended up in the lot on Marx Drive in what
neighbors say was a garbage bag.The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy, hoping to reveal more about the child’s death. So far, deputies have not ruled the death a homicide. And they have not released the baby’s age or gender. A
resident whose home adjoins the lot found the body Friday afternoon,
sheriff’s spokesman Tony Schall said. The body was tucked into dense
woods yards from the roadway.Deputies
arrived following the neighbor’s call. They stretched crime scene tape
around the neighborhood and at one point used a machete to clear the
dense plants and grass. The neighbor who found the baby declined comment. Dogs barked as investigators paced in and out of the wooded area. School buses dropped off children and residents paused at the crime scene tape to watch the goings on. Detectives went door to door on cordoned-off Marx Drive, asking neighbors for information.Jane
VanValen, who lives across the street from the lot, said she hadn’t
seen or heard anything unusual. But she was upset by news of the baby’s death.“It fires me up when I see children hurt,” she said. “There’s no point. It’s just a shame.”
As afternoon turned to twilight, medical examiner’s investigators quickly wheeled the body out on a stretcher.Across the street, in a fenced-in yard, Stefanie Simmons watched her children at play.
Emileigh,
2, and Hunter, 4, scooped piles of sandy dirt with shovels and dump
trucks. They stopped to munch Cheez-Its and an apple for a snack, their
mouths rimmed with stains from red Kool-Aid.To Simmons, it was eerie to hear her children giggling just yards from where a tiny baby lay dead.“It’s sad,” she said. “I just don’t know what to say.”
