Mom's Boyfriend Arrested After Toddler Critically Injured
Police: 1-Year-Old Suffered Head Injuries
POSTED: 11:34 pm EST January 14, 2011
INDIANAPOLIS --
The boyfriend of the mother of a 1-year-old boy was arrested on a charge of
aggravated battery after the toddler suffered critical head injuries,
police said.Paramedics were called to an apartment at 6119 Lakeview Drive
on the city's west side just before 8 p.m. Friday.
Emergency medical technicians notified police after they said the boy's injuries
were not consistent with a fall, as was initially reported.
The toddler was taken to Riley
Hospital for Children, where he underwent surgery for head trauma. He
was listed in critical condition Saturday.Police said the toddler
and his 2-month-old sister were being watched by Ayrick Steele, 30, the
boyfriend of their mother, Chrystal Dobbs, 23.
Steele was also caring for his two children at the time.Police
said Steele later admitted to striking the 1-year-old boy when the boy
would not cooperate as he tried to apply an ointment to his face for an illness.
"He did admit to the fact that he had struck the child, injuring
him," said Indianapolis police Sgt. Paul Thompson. "He reacted by either
striking the child or throwing the child into the wall."The 2-month-old infant
was taken into protective custody. Steele's two children were released to a
family member.Dobbs had not been charged Saturday. She told 6News' Myrt Price
on Saturday that she was in the other room when her son was injured."If
he survives, he's not ever going to be the same, if he makes it," she
said. "This hurts so much to know my child is fighting for his life and I
can't be there for him. I love him to death, that's my baby."
Dobbs is allowed supervised visitation with her son, police said.
Although she said she knew Steele was bipolar and a paranoid schizophrenic,
Dobbs said she tried to take her kids out of the situation."He
would try and discipline the kids, but he would go over board with it,"
she said. "Every time I tried to step in or whatever, he would come at
me. I've tried to get me and my kids out. I tried every thing in my
power to get away from him."Police said Steele has been arrested on
charges of domestic violence and child abuse in the past.

Poster's Note: Pathetic excuse for a mother. She wasn't chained to his wrist was she? There are no excuses for staying when your children are in danger. NONE!!!! There's no such thing as "tried to leave". Just bloody do it or else hand your children over to the state. And why weren't you putting ointment on your child? Look after your own kids!
